LS2 chain on ls1 sprockets
Quick question. Tried searching for several topics but I could not find a direct question. Will an ls2 chain fit on stock ls1 sprockets with no problems? If I bought a new ls2 timing set (chain and both sprockets), would it bolt up to the ls1 crank? Im 90% sure it will but some reassurance from someone who has done it would be great!
Thanks

The "LS2" chain is a direct replacement for all LS engines. If you buy a chain from GM, it will be that chain. For a 4.8 all the way to an LS7/LS9. They all use the same chain.
And, just to add a bit more info to the thread for people who might search and find it down the road....you can use the LS2 cam gear on your LS1 engine as well without any problems. The LS1 and LS2 crank gear are the same part.

The new replacement chain is all the same "LS2" style. I am unsure as to when they changed, but I know the stock chains in most every LQ4 you find out there was not the LS2 chain.
Yes, if you try to order an LQ chain at the dealership, you'll get the LS2 chain as John@SDPC stated.

Normally they have problems when you use a low quality dampener/harmonic balancer. Usually they have no dampening material so the chain takes all the bad hits that the engine can throw at it. Not a good thing. I would put a tensioner on the block if it has provisions for it definitely.

Switch to which chain though? From GM you will only get THAT chain. If you are talking about some other set, then its up to them. The GM chain, you can run with or without. It does not matter too terribly much. For a higher HP build, I would find a block that has provisions for it though.
