Default 408 or LS1

So i had my 2000 z28 at a shop in texas to get a cam and ported heads and LS6 intake. While there it was discovered that i basically need a engine rebuild. The shop gave me two options: rebuild my LS1 with stock internals and go with the original plan. Or go with a built 408 iron block with heads and big cam and a turbo 400. I don't know much about iron blocks. Looking for opinions and draw backs to iron block over aluminum.

Most people are fine with aluminum blocks. I plan to do a 402 stroker Aluminum LS2 with 250shot prob next year. And Im all about weight.

If your staying H/C I wouldn't worry to much about switching to iron.

Running boost at 16,17+lbs then I would prob say switch to iron. Hope that helped you

Why go with an iron block if you didnt need to?

When he said turbo it was followed by a 400. He is talking about his transmission not a boosted motor here guys.

Sounds to me you either want a fun daily driver or a strip only car...I don't think you are going to like that TH400 on the highway.

Of the choices given, stock bottom end rebuild or iron 408, not many would pick the stock rebuild.

Agreed on the fact that we need more information though.

Well of course, if money is not an issue I would always go bigger, and so would everyone else. Nothing wrong with a stock displacement h/c car. You can still lose traction on the street with the power it would provide. Would I go with a forged 5.7 when given the option of the 6.6? No way! Stock rebuilds are usually low budget oriented, but we do need some more info before we just speculate ourselves to death.

Ok I'm looking for a fun but fast street/strip car (mostly street). Its not in any way my daily so i'm ok with not having an over drive. I'm looking for bigger numbers in the future possibly forced induction. For now i'm looking for a fun fast all motor possibly nitrous car that could later be boosted.

A forged 347 out of your block would be cheaper, lighter and hold up to boost or gas

I have a 408 LQ9 and love it! would never go back. ls2 would be nice, but don't go back to stock..u will be just wanting more. LQ9 more boost/nitrous. easy choice LQ9!! The extra few pounds its not that bad. Its like having your little brother riding with you all the time. lol, and no way a stock block with internals will hold up to the amount of boost you can push with a LQ9 or nitrous.

i could be wrong but i am pretty sure iron vs aluminum doesnt matter when u are running 4 bolt main heads b/c that becomes the weak point before the block. a 383 or 402 will take a beating if built right. ballpark 80lbs heavier with iron, few hundred cheaper, also if u want 400+ cubes w/o ls2 conversion stuff, the 408 would save money there also
