Default 10 years--Comp 918s, Amsoil, 7,000rpms and 25,684 miles later..(pics included)

So, I just completed tearing my motor down for a update on some parts and check everything after sitting in storage for 3-4 years.

Car setup is 10 years old 25,684 miles with the following:

98 LS1
222/222 .566 .566, 112
Comp 918s
7.4 pushrods
Yank SY4000
3.23 rear

90% miles were highway miles and took it to 7,000RPMs regularly. Average oil change was with Amsoil synthetic oil every 10,000 miles with the exception of motor break in(rebuilt when added cam, springs etc.). I trusted the Amsoil a lot as you can tell lol, would I still keep changing oil every 10,000 miles? Probably not, only reason I did this was because of the highway miles(every weekend or other weekend 500 mile round trip) and the Amsoil. I will now change it about every 3000-5000 miles depending on use (strip, high RPM etc.). Also, I will not be using Amsoil anymore, even getting as cheap as I was, I am going to find something else.

As you can see the Com Cam, Comp 918s and the 7.4 push rods (bought from MTI 10 years ago) all look brand new! I would reuse the 918s again and buy them again if I was not stepping up to something larger.

Anyways, its not a 50,000 or 100,000 mile update. But I did a lot of 7,000 rpm runs and top-end pulls with it not to mention the longer oil changes.

What's up with the piston? Looking at the valve reliefs it appears to be rotated 90 degrees.

Thats because there is no valve reliefs, that is just a shadow from somewhere..

Just the flash creating that illusion. Nice to see the Amsoil didn't gel the heads at all. Stock T-stat?

I am not sure...I do not recall doing it 10 years ago! LOL Car always stayed cool though.

So what do the piston tops look like? These engines suck oil through the PCV into the intake. My engine still had a cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder walls after 20k miles but my piston tops were a carbon-crusted mess.

There is slight carbon build up, but not a ton. There was oil in the intakes of the heads of course. Speaking of PCV, what is the best setup to use now-a-days?

For what its worth I was running TR55s and 93 octane.

The cylinder walls looks great as well, nice cross-hatch patterns.

I have to tell people every day not to listen to the internet mechanics about 918's. They're a fine spring, and I've pushed them far beyond their limits with good results. I know Comp had some bad batches here and there, but most failures I see are from installer error, not checking install height, not checking valvetrain geometry, or improper cam selection.

I agree, obviously I still bought them when they were in question. I love these springs and for the money you can beat them.

those bad batches caused alot of problems,far out weighing any other issue concerning spring failures resulting from installer errors and the like...
