Nasty oil pan leak, possible pan removal
Well I finished my heads cam swap. Im guessing the oil leak was cause by dropping the pan a little to get the oil pump installed. This is a significant leak. The leak is occurring at the pan and block almost above the oil filter. Its not leaking anywhere else but in that area. I tried re torquing the bolts evenly, thinking that was the issue, but no dice. I just finished removing every bolt and adding a thin layer of RTV around the gasket then torqued the bolts evenly. Im going to let the RTV set over night and give it another shot tomorrow. If this doesn't fix my leak, what is the best way to drop the pan to add a new gasket? 99 trans am

you probably tore one of the two o rings that feed to/from the filter. I did the same thing when i dropped my pan.
I've posted some basic instructions on how to drop the pan in the past, but basically have to drop the K-member unless you have an aftermarket one.

same exact thing happened on my buddys t/a after the cam swap ironically it didnt leak til we dropped the pan for the second time for a bad oil pump oring. We just said screw it we had enough and took it to the gm dealership. $610 later he saved absolutely nothing by me and him putting the cam in ourselves. Good luck, the reason its leaking is just because of the pressure that has to flow through it there for the oil filter

I've taken the pan out twice on my car using a lift and not taking out the k-member. Driveshaft out, Tranny mount unbolted, Motor Mount Bolts out( Alternator bolts loose), Jack the motor as high as you can from the balancer and loosen the K-member bolts. You should have enough room to take it in and out.

Around the bolt holes of the pan gasket is a rubber/silicone type material. Well i guess when i loosened the pan to gain clearance to install the oil pump, i managed to rip the silicone out of one of the bolt holes. The one just in-front of the oil filter. Last night i drained the oil and dropped the pan. I attempted to fix it with some high temperature silicone. Im still not sure if its going to work or not. We will see tomorrow.

Wow, crazy. Same exact thing happened to me last night/this morning in my '99 Trans Am. Started my car up a few hours ago after finishing up my cam swap & I left a couple quarts of oil on my garage floor within the matter of 60 seconds. Got underneath, & this is what I found, right underneath the oil filter...
I've always had a small leak in the area that I could never find. I guess when I torqued it down it just finished the crack off. Time to install a new pan.
