Hello..I currently have a 04 ls1 in my 01 GMC Sierra RCSB..I built it with the intentions of passing the "sniffer" part of the test..Visual I am not worried about.
I went with a small 212/216 .525/.532 114lsa and now wish I would have went a little bigger or thought it out more..Dont get me wrong My truck runs really good..But I know its not optimized for my needs...Current mods
-04 ls1 stock short block
-PRC stage 2.5 CNC 5.3 heads
-Comp xfi 212/216 .525/.532 114lsa
-ASM lt headers with oe cats/custom 2.5 to 3 "Y" pipe
-Stock truck intake/ported 78mm t body
-TF udp
-Volant CAI
What cam do you guys think will be best for my setup as a DD/weekend 1/8 mi and still be able to pass smog on a really good tune? TIA

Your current cam has -14* of overlap, just keep it to -4* or less(example:224/224, 114lsa) ;that's the "unwritten" rule.
You can also definitely go with more lift.
220/220 112lsa (-4*), 218/224 113lsa (-5*), 220/224 113lsa (-4*),224/224 114lsa (-4*).
I've heard other people say they've passed with larger cams, but it's nothing I've heard verified as fact.

-4 overlap and numerically lower should pass emissions there since the tr224 is the biggest I've read passing emissions. I would get the biggest I could get to notice the difference over your current cam. Something like a tr224 but with a little more lift like the 224r should give a noticable gain keeping the 114lsa.
224/224 .575-580/.575-.580 114+2 or similar.

Thanks for the reply's...So its more about the overlap than lift / duration..hmm
-I was originally wanting to go with the TR220 to keep the power band low, But now am thinking on getting a custom spec'd cam as I know I am leaving alot on the table with my heads/set up........

So if I do 1.8 Rockers my overlap will stay the same?? Any negative effects of going to a 1.8
-So I have -10* to the "right side" of the ideal overlap required to pass smog

Ok cool..Thanks...I actually have a set of Scorpion 1.8 rockers...And am using comp 918 springs/Ti retainers...

Well if anybody knows what makes the AFR 205 heads Ca smog legal, I would like to know...I am wondering if my PRC heads will be a problem...I tried to go real mild on this build...my fingers are crossed...Also contemplating e85 as its available for $2.7x right up the street...hmmm

I am going to smog my truck this weekend...I am thinking on a larger cam after I pass and a new Yank TT2600...How does a 220/224 .575/.580 115lsa sound to you guys? I am thinking getting another cam from Scnieder here in San Diego..or do you think the lsr lobes would make WAY more power...

IMO, go with Comp Cams LSL Lobes(used with LSR cams).
219(.607")/219(.607") 112lsa with 2-4 degrees advance, that will give it -5* of overlap which should still pass emission tests! The lobe # is 13015, and PAC 1518 Valve spring should work fine with the LSL lobes.
Call up TSP they can get that grind for you
If you want to keep the lift under .600" then a 220/220 112 w/XER lobes (-4* overlap) will also work good, or better yet a EPS Truck Torque 2:http://www.engpwrsys.com/index.php?a...od&productId=5
I'd wait until after you pick your cam before deciding on the stall speed.

A .1 increase in rocker ration is ~ a 3 degree increase in duration at .050.
It does not change the seat duration though so installed duration etc doesn't change.
Higher ratio rockers can increase guide wear. I don't know what value to use for the increase though.
As long as there are no visual differences externally to stock heads, you can pass the visual. A big AFR on the front is pretty noticable so I've heard you just tell the tech the EO number for that p/n head and they can look it up to verify. But not all the p/n's have an EO. On the regional board, someone mentioned that they knew of a tech checking the casting # on the head. I suspect the tech was nervous about something and suspected a BAR test vehicle so the tech was trying to find something.

LOL..yeah thats what I figured..Do you think its the design of the combustion chamber? Wonder if they had carb in mind when designing them..I am sure my prc's will pass
The 219 LSR sounds like a nice cam...What size converter do you think would work with it? It would be nice to stay under .600 as I have the comp 918's with the blue stripe...If I go Comp I kind of wanted there new lobes..whats the lift on the XER cam...581??
