Default motor ate a largre nut for breakfast!

ok sooo here's the deal. the lock nut on my nitrous nozzle that goes on the inside of the intake bellow came loose and my motor swallowed it. i heard it when it happened. there was some loud noises then it died. when i drained the oil, for the first 5 seconds it came out clean pure clear orange dexcool. it looked like i was draining the radiator. after five seconds then he nasty yellow oil came out with some nastyness. i havent finised pulling everythign apart, and due to time issues i probably wont be able to pull it all the way apart for a while. what do you think i'm looking at as far as damage? is everything totally toasted or what

well block or head damage at a minimum, its the only way to get coolant in the oil, if it took out a conn rod theres no limit to the dfamage that could of occured, only way to know is to tear it down..with any luch its just the head..but it doesn't sound like it. what were you doing at the time of failure? (engine speed and load wise? on spray?)

okay im going to assume u wasnt reving it. did u attempt to restart it couple times?

honestly if i wear you i would pull the heads off to be SURE that no piece of bolt is laying in there. inspect all pistons for any damages, check all the valve for bent or damage and head gasket. you are going to need a torque wrench for the job.

If you instantly got coolant in the oil then the motor is most likely FUBAR

Pull the heads and inspect the damage. Id start looking for a replacement shortblock in the mean time

At minimum, combustion chamber and piston damage. A nut will do severe damage to an iron head. I can only imagine what it would do to an aluminum head, especially a thin wall casting like an LS1 head. The nut most likely punched the combustion chamber of whichever cylinder it decided to go into. It may have damaged the cylinder wall also. The piston definitely is going to be beat to ****.

Don't ask me how I know this...

Wow. My heart goes out to ya. It must have murdered the head, that's where the coolant broke loose from. You're def going to see piston damage, valve damage, head damage; hopefully the block is OK.

yeah. i thought somethin just gave out due to age/wear/whatever. when i discovered what had happened i was pissed. i could deal with athe motor just going out but did this REALLY need to happen? its harder to accept knowing it could have been easily prevented...oh well. i havent decided whether its getting fixed or getting sold.

Typically you are looking at a cylinder head and piston damage. If that looks like the extent of the damage, you should replace that rod bearing too as it can be smashed out of spec. You could have damage a cylinder too if you are unlucky.

lets say my block is salvageable....or i buy a bare block....i've heard something about having a machine shop balance it when its all together, but can the bearings, rods, pistions, etc. be put in by me and i can just take it when its assembled to a shop to have them do what they need to do??

Balancing is something that is done with piston, rods and crank out of the engine. However, if your short block is stock, balancing is not necessary. The factory replacement part piston & pin will be the correct weight already.

j/w how did the bolt go through your maf sensor? Or was the bolt after the sensor? Why would you ever even think about putting a bolt on the inside of your intake where you could destroy your motor??????? It must suck something terrible and I hope it is just a head. If the motor is like it is im guessing it made contact with the piston. Goodluck HOPE its the head

You will just have to tear it down and inspect for damage. The block and one head might be salvageable the way I do things. If you are like me you will want to upgrade if you have to do a complete rebuild, so might as well plan on a complete bottom end with more cubes and all supporting hardware unless you just have to get it back on the road asap. In that case maybe just a head and possibly a piston.

I don't even know if I'd bother pulling that engine apart. As already stated you've likely lost both a head and a piston at minimum. That means you're looking at a rebuild. Might as well pull the engine...
I think your LQ9 idea is the best bet.
