Default Help me pick a Cam for a Big Bore + ?'s

Hi guys, im building a 387 Big Bore through AP-Engineering this month. Times are getting exciting!! I went all out on the heads for Absolute Speed's stage 3 LS6 castings... ( )

The Heads will have 2.08 intake valves, 1.60 exhaust valves with Brodex Seats and 977 springs. Im upgrading to the Comp R lifters for the 977 springs. I currently have not decided what rocker arms to run as i have heard that valve lash becomes an issue. I really dont even know what valve lash is. Is a rocker upgrade necessary?

The block will be a stock polished crank with all the rotating goodies to reach the 387 c.i. ALL BORE specs.

Bolt ons include a Full Hooker exhaust, ASP pulley, TSP 85mm lid with SLP 85mm Maf, Absolute Speed stage 2 ported LS6 intake, Absolute Speed 80mm Throttle body, 42# injectors with good plugs and LS1edit Tune.

Im looking for a driveable set up as i will be driving my car 95% percent of the time and racing the other 5%.

I was considering the G5X 3 Cam as well as the TSP 231/237 Cam. Im thinking i want to go over 236/236 duration, atleast .600 lift yet keep the lobes no lower then 114 for drivability. Once i get this Cam thing figured out ill be done with the picking parts process. Look for big #'s out of Jays Heads with APE's block. Thanks again for any feedback or recommendations

Those cams you mentioned are way too small IMO.

I am running a 244 250 in my stock bore, 4.125 stroke motor. If I had a big bore like yours, I would think of going even bigger maybe. BTW mine is a daily driver.

The G5X3 sounds good to me.
I am also interested if a rocker upgrade is necessary.

I have a 230/236 .595/.598 114 LSA cam, which is considered pretty small for a big bore and my car made plenty of power, I think most of the power in these setups can be found with really good heads. You should be ok with your stage LS6 heads and a 236ish cam on a 114. Good luck.

Comp R lifters need a 0 to 1 thousanths lash. An adjustable valvetrain is a must with these. Stock lifters have a 2 to 4 thou lash.

Lou G. spec'd me a 240/244 .608/.612 114 for my 380ci big-bore and the cam makes awesome power throughout. Drivability is amazing. On a stock program the car idled! Not well, mind you, but it did. And with my old heads/cam program it runs great. Dyno tuning is tomorrow. I'll send you a graph then, if you'd like.

I think 20 to 40 thousanths (.020 to .040) for the stock lifters is more like it. (really more like .050)

ON the Comp R's, the website says 2 to 4 thousanths (.002 to .004).

You never heard that from me! Nitrous goes on in a few weeks...

Tony, Rich is tuning it at Magnaflow this weekend. We did a baseline of 460rwhp/435rwtq on 91 thru the full exhaust without tuning.

Cool Micah, I have a feeling that with some 103 octane and tuning you'll be putting my numbers to shame
