Default HELP!! Sudden oil psi drop

I have a 98 trans am and about 5kmiles ago i did a whole upper end build on the engine, cam lifters heads intake exhaust ect...
well anyway i never touched the oil pump, and after the build my idle oil psi warm was always around 35-40psi and at 3000rpm around 50-55psi.
so as i was stopped at a stoplight today i look down and notice at idle it was only making 18-20psi and at 3000rmp would only come up to 35psi. so i babyed her home. What would cause this? spun bearing? oil pump problem? it wasn't making any very loud sounds but was definitely nosier then normal and when i cut it off the motor stopped fast like it was seizing down..... i just need a starting point

And help is greatly appreciated!!

So there is an original oil pump on the car? How many miles are on the pump? Sounds like the oil pump took a dump.

the OP is probably on it's way out. mine took a dump at 50k. replaced it with a melling hv. problem solved.

sadly the only way to tell is to start pullin **** apart.

I would say put a mechanical gauge on it first.

Why would you have to put a HV to "solve" the problem. Was it the pump or bearings?

Wouldn't a stock replacement pump do the same if it was the pump?

Your early actions probably saved the engine. I would verify with the mechanical like the others have said. Or if you are scared to start it again, just install a new oil pump.

Ok so i fired it up this morn and cold the oil pressure was normal around 40 psi and i took it on a 5 min ride to my shop and at 3000 rpm is was aroun 45-50 psi but as the engine warmed up it dropped and dropped and when i parked it it was idling around 20psi again, so does that single out the pump? i have the front of the engine tore down and im gonna put a new one on tomorrow. i just hope the bearings and everything are ok
