Default Best Maggie Cam?

Hey all, I have a Maggied LS6 motor and am looking to install a cam and port the heads...basically because I can never leave well enough alone. This is for a CTS-V that is mainly street driven.

Anyhow, I am looking at either the LS9 or TR Cheater V3 cam at the moment:

LS9 - 211/230 .558/.552 122.5 LSA
V-3 - 219/230 .607/.604 117 LSA

For Comparison: LS6 - 204/218 .551/.555 117.5 LSA

It has been suggested that the LS9 is too close to the LS6 cam to provide much benefit, however this was from someone trying to sell me a GT-11 cam.

If there is anything better suited, please advise...I cannot find much more on Maggie cams other than the two I already have listed.

Thanks in advance!

The one you have is plenty.Avoid very high lift on SC setups. Let the boost do the work.
If you really insist on a cam, PM me with full combo.

East Texas Muscle Cars has a nice maggie grind that has been showing 50hp gains well keeping driveability. A lot guys on the LS1 GTO site are unning it and love it.

When I am ready for a cam I am going to have Ed Curtis spec me out a cam for my goals and mods for a matched set up...

good advice here.....

Both of those cams will show nice gains i would get the v3.

You also might want to consider adding ported 317 6.0l truck heads so they will lower the compression and allow you to run more boost and they flow the same as your 243's.

Have you looked into meth and maybe a smaller pulley for your charger?

I am limited by the 112, I can get an OD crank pulley with the 2.8 snout pulley and max out at about 9-10 lbs of boost. Wasn't planning on doing any of this at the moment and not really looking to go beyond what the Maggie I have can provide.

That is why I was looking to a cam and ported stock 243's for a little more power...and I was going to install the take out LS6 in my 5.3 Silverado.

With today's expert tuners, I would get a cam that has a 1600>6200 rpm range. No higher than that since the Maggies are undercurve SCs not top ends like centrifugals.
Add a bit of overlap for power and voila.

Hey Predator I wanted to get your view on what I read about supercharger cams. The article was by David Vizarard.(I think) Well he does talk about not needing too much overlap and make sure their is plenty of exhaust duration. However the most intresting part was to pick a cam that support were the supercharger fails.

Example maggies fail in upper rpm range so pick a cam that supports upper rpm to help carry the power curve further. Centi's would be the exact opposite. I hope the OP does not feel like i'm trying to hijack his thread. I never hear about maggie ls1 cam grinds. I just thought that I could share some information that I read to help out the OP and to get Predator's veiw. Always value information coming from Predator. Good luck OP and keep us updated with your build and what cam you picked.

My 224 works OK in my DD S10 with a 5.3l and a 112 (11.8@123/3900lbs). I would recommend a GT2-3 though, after tuning many of these it just a great all around maggy cam. It idles like stock and makes great power where the 112 shines. The 122 works great with a 54-444-11 comp shelf grind, as it likes the extra rpm.

Thanks guys for all of the info thusfar, as stated there is a lot of good info here and I appreciate all views and comments.

Anyhow, from everything I could find by searching until this point has been recommendations for exhaust biased high LSA cams with Maggie's to prevent the boost from bleeding off through overlap. However, if I am not mistaken a high LSA will bring the power band of the cam into the upper RPM ranges outside of the Maggie's effective range unless the cam is advanced.

Here is my question, if you loosen up the LSA (to a 114 - 116 range) can you run less of an exhaust bias since the boosted incoming charge will promote exhaust scavenging?

Another thought is that I wanted to keep a mostly smooth idle since I will have to sit in DC beltway traffic from time to time, I don't mind a little chop though. That said, I thought anything below a 115 LSA would noticeable "rump" at idle while bringing the effective range lower into the RPM band. How would a 113 LSA cam idle? Will 4* advance make an improvement in the idle quality?

The Cam Motion cams looked ok, I would say that these two were marginally in the area of Predetors reccomendation:

222'/232', .595"/.578", 116'+4' on 112* CL (Cam Motion)
220'/230', .586"/.569", 116'+4' on 112* CL (Cam Motion)

And I found this one from LG Motorsports that more closely matches the recommended:

G5X1 228'/232', .588"/.574", 112' or 114' LSA

Any thoughts or suggestions on any of these? Thanks again for all of your assistance and shared knowledge.

Do not be afraid of a bit of overlap with boost. I have yet to see a negative overlap cam make more power than a positive one. All within reason of course.
The cam I recomended has 1* overlap, hardly too much and very streetable (DD).

My C6 LS2 had 317 heads (stage 1) and a cam with 4* overlap. 578rwhp with a Maggie

Thanks for the clarification on this, there seems to be a lot of myth associated with Maggie cam's for some reason. One question...the cam you spec'd..is that an off the shelf or would that be a custom grind? I cannot find it anywhere.

Thanks again!

I know it might be a dumb question, but why do you wanna avoid very high lift? And what do you class as very high lift?

I have a GT2-3 with my MP112 Supercharged LS1. Put down 518 and 526 at only 6.5 lbs. It does idle like stock if that's what you want, although I wish I could have gotten something with a slightly more agressive idle. Powerband is just like stock as you can see, just lots more of it.

Plenty of other info in my sig.
