Default PRC 5.3 stage 2.5 heads...mill to 59cc or use .040 head gasket

so i am trying to decide if i should mill my heads to or use the smaller head gasket to obtain 11:1 compression ratio. the heads will already obtain me a 10.75:1 compression ratio due to the already smaller combustion chamber. now i just have to decide to mill or smaller gasket.

what i am looking for here is the Pros and Cons of mil vs head gasket. i am leaning toward smaller head gasket due to better quench and less chance of detonation, but milling is free from TSP, and would save me in the end an extra $90 if i went with the cometic .040 head gasket

I have the 5.3 stage 2.5 heads they are 59 ccs, I run a standard GM 30$ MLS head gasket set, and sprayed on these heads at the track and had no trouble at all. Only downfall I could ever see is later on If they had to be cut again not sure how much could be taken. But these heads on my stock shortblock, with a custom EPS cam, and a fast 92 setup put down 463 rwhp and 428 ft lbs. On TSPs dyno when I took it up there to be tuned. I have had great luck with these heads thats why I put them on my 383.

ok, now i was calculating and i am just in a little bind, i can not get a strait answer on the GM MLS head gasket size. i am getting the head gaskets from TSP, but just want to make sure that they are .051 compressed like they say, cause some people say that they are .056. now if they are .051 then i only need a 60cc chamber to make 11:1 but if they are .056 then i will need a 59cc chamber to obtain 11:1.

so did you get your GM MLS head gasket from them? if so what was the thickness on it?

Personally I prefer to go with the thinner gasket to get the quench tighter. What camshaft are you running and do you have valve reliefs?

Always go to a thinner head gasket for compression well at least to .40 for a better quench before milling the heads. You can't add material once its gone.

i have also heard of some people having PTV clearance issues (only a few) with the LSR cams so if i have any issue i can always pick up a new GM MLS head gasket to give me a little mreo PTV for like 30 bucks! thanks guys, i got my tax return today, so i will be buying my PRC heads today and getting the bolts and head gaskets kit with it from Texas speed, then will admire them when they get here!!!
