I've been wanting to install a cam for some time now but kind of scared of these new motors compared to old small blocks. I recently was looking at a ls1 performance book with the truck,corvette, and I think camaro on the cover, anyways it sounds like in order to install a cam and oil pump you must pull the front cover and oil pan to install mainly the pump and just the front cover for the cam, someone please tell me I'm wrong. Any tips or links for a pump and cam install would be great.

no you should not have to drop the pan, on some engines you have to drop it to get the front cover of but you should be fine

 

No pan removal, but the front two bolts of the pan need removed to remove the timing cover...

if you want to swap only the cam you only have to pull the front cover, if you want to swap the oil pump and or the bottom timing cover you have to drop the pan hope this helps

 

You dont have to remove the pan completely, just have to loosen the bolts enough to drop the pan an inch our so

 

I only had to lower my pan during my swap. Unfortunately, doing so tore the oil pan gasket which resulted in me removing it anyhow, which is a HUGE PITA. Be careful and enjoy
