Default cam advice for DD firehawk

hey guys, i'm looking into doing a cam swap on my '02 firehawk, and while i've already done a bunch of research (talked to local shops, fbody club members, and read the cam guide), i know there are some smart and honest people on this board that could give me some good information.

right now it only has a lid, ls6 intake manifold, LTs, ORY, slp catback, and a cutout. it's a 6-speed with stock 3.42 gears. while i'm looking for some noticeable gains (i care more about overall performance/quicker 1/4 mile than peak rwhp #'s) and a nice growl, i also care about reliability. the car has very low miles on it and i intend to keep it around for a while.

someone at a shop recommended the MS3 cam to me and said it would make great power for my setup, but a 2nd opinion told me it was too big for my gear ratio and stock heads and that it would idle very rough. a different shop and someone from a car club both swear by doing a custom grind to specifically fit my car, and said while the peak rwhp will be lower the power band will be broader. the last one that was recommended to me was the f13, which a guy said his friend had in his car for 5 years without any problems and put down great numbers.

if anyone agrees/disagrees with any of the above opinions or has a different cam to suggest please let me know. look forward to hearing your responses

Ms3 is a race car cam for a dd I would do a 224 228 on a 110 can do xer lobes and get it in a tsp package for really cheap with everything you need. Other members might chime in who have the cam. Its a great performer throughout the entire range of rpms you will see. So it will be a nice gain across the entire range while driving the car. It can use the stock gearing fine and do best up to 4.10 gears.

I think something along the lines of a 228/232 on either a 110 or 111 LSA would be good. Not too big, but not too small, plus the 110 or 111 LSA will give you that nice choppy idle. With that cam, you should be right at 400 rwhp, with a good tune that is. I've seen a lot of people wish they would have gone bigger in their cam selection.

I would look at the 228R on a 112 LSA. It has a nice broad powerband and lopey idle. The MS3 is a pretty large cam so it usually doesn't get used as a daily driver cam unless you are specifically looking for a big cam.

I would get a custom grind, but the 228r seems to be a really popular choice these days. It's what I have and still love it also..

Consider 4.10s as your next mod. You'll thank me.

Futral told me even the f13 cam is suppose to be ran with 4.10 gears. If you decde to keep your 3.42 the TR224 on 112 is a good choice. I think you could get away running an F13 with stock gears though. If it was me I would do an f13 on 112 lsa its a nice strong cam that gives you room to grow.

eps 222/22x on 115 will be smooth and powerful. when your driving city and in traffic you can let the clutch out without the gas and not flinch.

Agreed about the gear swap. You'll be much happier with 410's if you DD that cam.

Great choice !! IMHO, the F13 has been one of the best all around cams for ours cars for years. It's a great DD cam and it provides great power and performance at the strip. Even with my 4000 yank and 373 gear ,my car drives absolutely perfect even with the A/C on !! BTW once you put a set of P&P 243's or a set of 5.3's on your car, that cam will really shine thru . You won't be disappointed.

F13 Is a great choice... I was lookin at that one for my car but went a lil bigger. You'll be very happy with it, but I do x3 the 4:10's. They'll work great with your set up.
