Default Why mobile 1 rocks

I installed my new heads/cam/intake this weekend and when I pulled the heads off I was surprised to see that you could still see the original crosshatching in the cylinder sleeves.

My car has 78,000 miles on it and has pratically lived at 6k RPM. I am very please. I have pulled cams outs of cars that use regular non synthetic oil and after 5k miles it looks worn.

This picture was posted on BOBISTHEOILGUY.com's message board, so I thought you might be interested to read what they say on there:

http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/...c;f=1;t=005554

(to sum up, they think any oil could've shown results like this, and like I mentioned, this doesn't show you if M1 is protecting the bearings or valvetrain as good as other oils could)

Oh, and one more thing. What is it about the LS1 which causes carbon to build up so easily in the combustion chamber?

I can't speak for the bearings, but the cam looked brand new. I took out my stock cam at 72k miles and it had no wear on the lobes or the journals. I installed an ls6 cam and ran it for 6k miles and when I pulled it out it looked awsome as well. I believe that any oil can protect you engine if changed regularly. But as I said before...I have pulled numorours cams out of cars that used something other than mobil 1 and they looked worn. I guess I just have yet to see a bad mobil 1 cam. Just something to think about.

Hate to burst your bubble but my old motor which had 65,000+ miles and was blowing HUGE clouds of smoke at high RPMs still showed tons of crosshatch when I pulled it apart . Means nothing as far as an indication of engine wear.

the only oil i use is amsoil it is much better then mobil1
mobil1 is known to be thin
for example in my 89 ta i ran mobil1 10w-30 and oil pressure would go down to 20 lbs when it got hot
i switched to amsoil at the same wieght and now it does not go below 30lbs
my father is a dealler so i get it for nothing

I use Mobil 1 15W-50. Oil pressure never drops below 55 psi.

Not to rain on your parade or anything but when i did my cam change a few months ago i had worn cam bearings and mains i was running M1 5/30 since day one when i bought her (new) and at 15,000 this is what happened. Have been to the track one time during those miles, needless to say i was disapointed in M1 and per Patman gonna run something different to save my bearings

I've got alittle over 16,000 now, hopefully Amisol will work alot better

Yes, that stuff thins out very badly. I put some in my wife's Honda, and before I used it I also had a new sample tested. The new sample came out at 11.4cst at 100c, or a middle 30wt oil, and after only 2400 miles I resampled it, and it came out at only 8.8cst, or in other words it turned into a 5w20! And her engine typically does not thin out the oil that easily either.

Not true though. If the oil you're using is too thick or too thin, it doesn't matter how clean it is, it's not going to protect the bearings or the valvetrain as well. Every engine has a certain viscosity that it likes, depending on it's clearances, it's mileage and the typical oil temps you see. If you pick an oil that is too thin you'll end up with higher bearing wear. If you pick an oil that is too thick, it won't flow as well and wear will also be higher, and horsepower will be down. The LS1 likes an oil closer to the top end of the 30wt range.

Patman

What type are you recommending than?

How about on a new head/cam swap? Run regular oil for save 100-200 miles (basically a race only car) and than change to a syn oil?

Thanks

David
