My original cam choice gone, Need a new one
So I tried saving some money and it backfired. essentially i bought a regrind cam thinking that since it was done on a stock cam it should be fine since the stock cam is billet to begin with. apprerantly this is not the case.
So Ive decided im going to buy a new cam off the Texas-speed website, and am not sure what i should do. im thinking of going with a comp cam custom or the texas speed 228R
the cam i originally bought was 226/ 229 .575 .548 on 114 LSA. as you can probably tell im trying to get the most horsepower possible without killing my gas mileage (i average 20mpg a week now).
should i just call up comp cams and have them make these specs for me or am i leaving some power on the table? I originally considered the TR224 but its probably not the HP im looking for. Id like to be over 400rwhp and im also having pocket ported 243s milled .030" added to the build. Im sitting on 350rwhp right now.

well i'de sell you my 224r if i was home. both the 224r and 228r are great dd cams, my gas mileage hardly changed after swapping cams. and in the summer time i can run with the a/c on all day no problem.

I also forgot to mention that I'm going to be using comp 918s with titanium retainers. Don't know if this makes any difference. Also does having a 114 lsa instead of 112 help with mpg? I don't mind bucking when i say daily drivable my only concern is mpg especially these days

I love this site and have been on here everyday for 2yrs and have had a ton of usefull great help with everything to do with our LS F bodys...Except for CAM advise, I research a whole lot on these cams, valvetrain etc. and when I asked about a good DD/500 mile per week cam for my 01 full bolton WS6 that is under .560 lift and 228 duration all I got was the regular "do research", or 228dur, .560 lift is a baby cam....well my buddy listened to a few guys on here but hes a newbie and just asked for the best big HP cam for DD cam 6spd like mine and was recommended 236/241 .601/.614 113LSA with STOCK 241's and he had the LSX shop install full boltons and they can tune well also but he had to sell the car a month later due to huge losses of oil thru PCV or somewhere? and worst of all nobody could get it to idle steady, it was 600-1300 constantly, fuel system was going out,clutch couldnt hold high rpm, pushrods, the list goes on and on so you have to be very specific on here but still people didnt recommend under 228dur .600 lift for me when I asked about a good cam for my 500mi per wk bolt on, 4.10 stock rear, built t56/ls7 clutch WS6, and I stated I dont care about numbers and just want hard pull thru 2k-6k, my buddy put down 390rwhp and I still got him by .2 tenths every time. Why cant people be creative anymore? I guarantee I can make a 220/220 .581/.581 with my #241's built up send my car into mid 11's....anyone want to bet me? and I can drive it without changing vsprings every 2 months! I'm at 12.49 on street tires now FYI with stock 241's,stock 6.0L cam.

Actually, Cam Motion makes it in a couple different lifts. One is like .57x and another is around .64x. The LSA number you are asking about 112, 113, etc. will effect the cam's performance. Most notably the idle and powerband. Nothing I would get super caught up in honestly. Some cams just work, some cams have lots of cheerleaders, its up to you to decide which is which. I chose a Cam Motion grind because I like being different and it came very highly recommended. When a group cheerleads I back away quick. Guess its just not me to buy into that. ok since you took the time to type all of that....stuff...out i'll take the time to TRY and respond to it. god help me.
i love this site too, and the cam sheet patg just sent me begs to differ with the last half of your statement.
i see nothing wrong this. 1) you SHOULD do your research, that is a regular response for a reason. since you have been a religious member for the last two years you should know how often somebody asks for DD cam help. 2) and they are right, it is a baby cam. but that's what you asked for so....? i don't get it....
if he listened to their advice w/o researching it before purchasing, then the blame is on him. if they told him to throw a 246/254 cam in his all stock ls1 would he have done it? probably.
mistake #2. your buddy is on a roll.
annnnd #3. he SOLD the car because of a common oil consumption problem? that was most likely due to a bad PCV, valve seat, or valve guide. that was smart. the cam he had wasn't overly huge, as long as it wasn't rings there was no reason to sell the car for a little oil loss. did he do a leak down and compression test?
sounds like he needs a new tuner. which shop was working on it?
derrrr wut? the cam made the fuel system fail....the WHOLE fuel system?
and? he needed a new clutch after modding his car. how is that irregular in any way?
ok now you're just being ridiculous. did he have bent pushrods? was there a PTV issue? did they disappear? just stating the word "pushrods" tells us absolutely nothing.
does it? that's a shame. sounds like either your friend 1) didn't know what he was doing or 2) bought a car that was on the verge of falling apart and that cam was just a nail in the coughin. or 3) both 1 and 2.
uhm yeah, that made almost no sense. but if i was to recommend you a cam right now it would probably be over .560 lift. maybe not quite .600 but whatever.
ok so his car ran pretty good for long enough to make some dyno pulls and then race you. ok. couldn't have been totally FUBAR'd. and .2 tenths could be driver mod or the simple fact that his car had no low end. i've beaten cars with MUCH bigger cams than me simply because they had too much cam for the heads/intake/rear end. and secondly people can be creative, did you or your buddy talk to pat or predatorz or geoff skinner?
