fuel mileage?????
ok guys, i need some help. I had a comp 228-232 cam installed a few mts ago, and now i have shitty gas mileage!! i could understand if i were making like 550- + rwhp, but 38-'s and an adv. of 16 mpg sucks. i only get about 185 miles to a tank. and thats even on long extended trips. i have taken the car back to the tuners, and he looked over everything, even took the car on a decient drive and datalogged everything, and said the tune could'nt get any better, and that it was even better than most he has seen. so, is this the results of the cam that i have, or do you think there might be something else going on. I trust my tuner, but i wanted to get a group consensis. thanks oh, before the can i was adv. about 22mpg around town, and the last trip i got 32mpg. thats a hell of a difference for just a cam!

I get 350 or better with the cutout open cruising in 6th gear at 75-80mph.. There is something wrong here man! I have a big cam and can still pull 20+ in town and 30 on the highway! What size injectors? What mods do u have to back the cam?

just thinking if your getting good mpg, how much fuel are you putting in every 185 miles? is it a full tank or 3 quarters of a tank, etc?
just thinking if your only putting in x-amount of liters, sorry gallons then maybe the sender unit is playing up and reading your using more on the gauge than you are, also what type of driving? are you planting the foot or all stop start, etc.

mods are,slp lid, slp bellow, cam, springs, prods, pacesetter long tubes, ory, magnaflow cat back, walbro 255 pump, zex wet kit, 4.10 gears,ngkbr7ef plugs. everything else is stock. 45k miles. it takes about 12-13 gal. for a full tank, and i usually use the gallons that is pumped in to cal. mpg. ex. if i have been 165 miles since the last fill up and it takes 10.4 gal to fill back up then i got 15.86mpg. as far as driving goes, i drive it like most would, civil in town, hamer down every once in a while, 1st-3rd wot pulls. havent even been to the track since the cam. need help!!! is this normal, or is there a problem.

I about **** myself because of the huge cam! Even in town I average any where from 17-20 depending on how I drive! When i drove to MN that was even with a few WOT pulls to 140+!

i had the cam installed the end of feb. and noticed the shitty mpg on the way home. it is about a 230mile trip 1 way. so about 5 or so weeks later, i called the tuner to ask about the fuel consumption and he thought that it was really low so i carried the car back. that was when he said the tune was spot on. i don't put many miles on the car anymore, since the cam swap. so it probably takes me 2+ weeks to go through a tank. if it got better mpg, i would drive it more, but at 4.16 a gal. , can't afford to play or enjoy the new power. i need ideas, of things i could check. the car has a strong exhaust smell, almost like it is running really rich, but i have heard that is because of no cats. also, i have started to notice that the car bucks when at a constant speed, say 60mph in 6th gear. not all the time, but in the 6 mile trip to town, it will do it 2 or more times. almost like it does when going through a parking lot in 1st at say 5mph. i didnt think that my cam was big enough to give me problems like that, esp. with the 115 lsa.

I got torquer v.2 and stock 243's on my gto only. Went from 17/27 to 13.5/22.5. I am displeased with my mileage also. The other day I hit a bunch of redlights and stopped at a drive thru for 5 min or so of idling. 1.48 miles on .38 gallons. So I was on pace for 4mpg in heavy stop and go traffic. What's realistic about my gto's fuel metering system is it factors in idling so the numbers can be staggering if u do a lot of idling.

Sounds like you might need a new tuner.....
What is his tune? SD OL? CL? Some tuners will leave the car in open loop as a "finished" tune but this will put a damper on fuel economy for sure because the computer is not referencing the 02 sensors to make fueling adjustments.

Those 410's are not helping the cause. Your tuner is missing something if you are smelling exhaust fumes and your car is bucking on steady state driving. Get the tune checked and check for both vacume and gas leaks.

I disagree with SOMSS. The 4.10:1 gearing is not inherently at fault by itself. Especially if it is a T56 car with a decent cam. I forget what you have, and I'm too lazy to go look again. But even if it's an A4, you should still be able to top 20 MPG on the highway.
It was impressive that stock, these cars would pull 1430 RPM at 65 MPH. But I've seen 27 mpg with a cammed 5.7L combo turning 1800 RPM at 65 MPH. And a T56 / 4.10 / 275-40R17 combo is more like 1750.
The wilder the cam, the more cruise RPM it needs. A good tuner might be able to get it driveable with less gear, but that isn't always best.
