Default Spring choices for comp LSR cam

I'm thinking of running one of the new comp LSR cams, specifically the 223/231, .610/.617 on a 112lsa, in my auto 98' Z28. Comp recommends their new 26926 springs for the LSR cams (they were made for this lineup), but after looking at spring kits I found they were super expensive (around $450).

So my question is, can I run a different spring wth this cam (such as the patriot extremes), or is the pricey comp 26926 my only option?

I would think any spring rated to handle that lift will be fine I personally stay away from comp springs. Heard/seen way to many screwed motors because of failed comp springs 918's pretty much exclusively

I have run patriot gold duals. Good to .660 lift. Much cheaper option. I ran the patriot spring for over 2 years(comp lsk) when I took them off I checked then and they were still good.

I'm running light valves and shimmed Pac 1518s on a 227 .613" lobe. Wish me luck.

For value, Lunati seems to be appreciated...

I would run the Comp 26926 springs complete with the tool steel retainers.

I agree, when I install these cam I use the 26926TS-KIT. Comes with everything, works like a champ.

You dont take into account that there are probably 200,000 918s sold a year. So even if the percentage of failures is the same as everyone else, you simply hear more about them because there are so many out there.

I ran 918s on my personal LSR lobed cam (219/235 .607/.621) with tool steel retainers and lighweight valves.

PAC 1521's duals would be a good option.

What's funny is...... Most of the springs mentioned are the very same spring lol The 26926 is the only one that stands from the rest.

Exactly, most springs regardless of being labeled comp, lunati, prc are made by some other manufacturer.

That's funny....

Comp bee hives and Lunati bee hives are NOT made by the same company.

That's why you only heard about 918's with problems.

I'd personally look up the springs specs for the cam in question and then order a Lunati bee hive kit or call FTI and get a kit from Ed Curtis.

Not true

OP: I'd recommend the PRC .650" lift dual spring kit! $289.99 including titanium retainers!

Take a look at our (PAC) new dual springs (1205-1209). Rated from .700 to .750 lift and they have the same proccessing and treatments as our proven 1300 series drag race springs. Tons of vendors on here can get you setup with them.

I think there should be no issue with the Patriot Gold or PRC. I will be running the golds with a 223/231 LSR grind. PAC is nice too. I think the Comp's are a little pricey.

What makes the 26926 springs worth so much more?

Nothing. Buy the PAC springs or the BTR springs.

Just buy a good quality set of dual springs (TSP, BTR, PAC, LUNATI) good for at least .650 lift and you will be fine. I run BTR with titanium retainers. But you could buy them with steel for around $220 and be sure to get push rods with your combo.
