Cool good ol Head/Cam story

Hey guys i just couldnt sell my car lol...to attached i guess =P but anyways im thinking of a head/cam project this winter and i wanted some tips from the pros before i start. Of course im going with a TSP package and heres what im thinking... ported ls6 heads(with the top R/arms and pushrods..oil pump ect, 233/239 cam(112 lsa), ls6 intake 102mm FAST tb and volant cold air intake. i just had the transmission rebuilt. its stock with a Zpak rebuild kit and i was wondering if i need to have something done to it and i was also thinking about 3.90s in the rearend or should i just go 3.73s? its basically a dd. THANKS GUYS

You can't run a 102mm TB on a LS6 intake.

Thanks hardcore..lol I didn't know that but that's cool to know. I'll probably just go with a 90mm then. And predator I think i know what your getting at and the ls6 intake takes a chunk out of the budget..should I skip the intake and dump my $ in the heads or even it out because air flow is important too?

U want to match your cam to your whole set-up so i would figure out the heads and intake do 3.73s and you will need a stall if its and auto like a 3600 might have better luck getting everything together then have a custom cam speced to fit your goals.

if your on a budget and wanting to swap to a taller gear in the rear, spending the money just to go from 3.23's to 3.73's is silly IMO. The performance difference is not worth it and the money could be spent elsewhere like predator said, in the heads or at least go 3.90's+. You def want to upgrade the intake tho as a heads/cam combo would be a total dog without the better runners of an ls6 or fast. The ls1 intake would hold you back a lot is what Im getting at and the ls6 intake can be had for a few hundred bucks used if you search around the classifieds. Id also find a nice stall to add to the tranny as that will really make use of the extra power from the new heads and cam. You can also sell off many of the old parts you are taking off to retain some of the money spent on new goodies. Good luck with the build, take some pics and post up your results!

get the ls6 intake used for $300 .a ls6 intake is a 3 bolt design, you need a 3 bolt TB.you don't nee it bigger then the intake opening,78mm.the ws6 store has them.don't get a hand held tuner unless you are really into them.you can get a mail order tune from frost for $150.If you want go to the tuning section to learn about hand held tuners.look at some TSP PRC head/cam pkg,ls6 st 1 or 5.3 head st 2.5.you can use stock ls rockers with a trunnion bearing upgrade.

x2.

I'd also skip the gears and get a nice stall converter. this will make a much bigger difference, plus you'll still want those 3.23s to retain your gas mileage.

looking back, i wish i'd have done a stall before gears. at least you don't have the 2.73s like i did in my 3rd gen, lol.

i'd pass on the aftermarket TB as well. Just have yours ported for about a hundred bones. You can always upgrade to a FAST intake later. Definately easier to swap than the heads, so buy the best heads you can afford first!

good luck.

You guys rock! And I personally do like the .23s because of the mileage. I don't have all the tools so I'm having my bud build it while I help and learn. And yes I was choosing between frost and Mickey and I'm going with frost. But I'm doing this all at once. I'm going with the ls6 intake and slp lid, as for the head/cam package I wanted to get the set-up with the biggest rwhp possible. I have a 1.85 roller rocker set up on my stock heads but idk if I need new/stronger ones..and I guess I'll try to sell my old heads and intake to get some cash for the new set-up. I want a head/cam package that'll give me options and all the parts I need ..I just don't know which one will get me the biggest rwhp gain for a strict (head/cam/stall and intake) build

I know a few guys that are making 450-470hp. @ the tires with Texas Speed PRC 2.5 ls6 heads, ls6 intake, ud pulley, ported throttle body, headers, exhaust, & the same cam you plan on using. Horsepower will depend on the condition of your short block & how much you have them mill the heads. However, you could spend an extra $1,000 on a set of PRC 215, TFS 215, or the new AFR 215 heads & pick up an additional 20-25hp. In the end, you will have to determine how much you want to spend to achieve your goals. Good luck!
