Default camming a truck

i have an 03 avalanche with a 5.3 in it. Im looking for a little bit more power.
i was thinking about puting a stock c5 cam in it. reason being is that i can do it for free. my friend and i did a h/c swap on his 99 vette, and he said i can use his stock stuff.

anyone think it would be worth it?

Here are some cam specs, I dont think the little difference in cams is going to net you any real seat of the pants performance.

For the amount of work there plus gaskets, ls2 chain, oil pump, I don't think
that cam has much if any more to offer than the truck cam. At least find a
good used ls-6 cam or perhaps a 210-216 comp cam w/springs & pushrods
either of these sticks would be worth about 25 more horse

good point. i just figured since it was a free cam, it might be worth it but by the sound of it.... It would not be. i guess the power difference lies in the intake and exhaust.

You need something with a much tighter LSA to get that truck moving. I like TR's old man truck cam, just ground on a tighter lsa like a 114 or 112 even.

I'd say something like a 212/218 114lsa or for something slightly bigger with more thump a 218/220 112lsa cam. Keep both in the .52x/.53x lift and you have a set-up that makes great under the curve power will pull to 5800-6000 rpm and not eat up springs.

However, if you do decide to install it make sure to report results. I have the 5.3 in my Silverado and an 02 LS1 Vette cam in the basement.

No You don't have to change springs but brand new LS6 yellows are only $59 at Fred Beans Parts .
