Default Why LS7 lifters?

Why should I upgrade to LS7 lifters in my car? Just ordered cam, springs, pushrods, timing chain and under drive pulleys. Havent't ordered headers yet, trying to decide which brand to get.

It's not an upgrade over your stock lifters. The only advantage they have over buying standard lifters from GM is that they are packaged as a set of 16 for A LOT less money than buying singles.

Ok, thanks. Wasn't sure. I see people saying they got them and was wondering if they were better than stock.

They are the same, for all practical purposes, as your stock lifters. These engines are starting to get higher mileage on average, so people are replacing lifters more frequently now.

So to replace a stock lifter in a stock LS1 motor, the LS7 lifters will work fine?

And if I decide to replace my lifter guides at the same time, do I order LS1 guides or LS7 guides?

LS7's are the new LS1 lifter. Only difference it bowl size so you may need a touch shorter pushrods, but you need to check. Just wondering are you doing just a cam install? If so, why replace lifters if you don't have to pull the heads..

No, I'm not doing a cam install. I'm trying to track down a nasty noise, and I seem to have it narrowed down to lifters. I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but I figured I jump into an existing discussion rather than start a new one just to clarify one thing.

I'm keeping everything stock, so I was just trying to confirm that I was on the right track. Sounds like the LS7 lifters are the stock replacement, but I may need pushrods (depending) and I'd like to replace the guides as well.

But would I order LS1 guides or LS7 guides?

Thanks all.

I believe by "guides" you mean lifter trays, your stock trays will do fine, unless they are damaged (which is unlikely )

I'd replace the stock trays with LS2 trays while you're there. The new style trays feel noticeably stronger/stiffer, and are cheap insurance against lifters turning!

Great, thanks guys.

So LS1 motor with LS2 trays, LS7 lifters, and pushrods sized as required.

I knew it would be a simple answer.

The overall height on a ls7 lifter from the roller to the bottom of the cup is the same height as an ls1 height. When you put them side by side they appear to be a different height because of the cups and the bodies of each lifter but this has already been a busted myth....they are the same overall height and use the same lifter length for a stock setup.

I thought the reverse was true: they appear identical length when placed side-by-side, but in reality the cup position is different. So in effect they appear same length, but behave as if different in length.

But this is why I like to ask. Just because something is said often doesn't make it true.

IIRC (which Im almost positive I do) you use the same pushrods. They are a direct factory replacement and just a "revamp" over the LS1 style lifter...they are the new factory replacement.

We just had a lengthy discussion of this subject. The only thing that was established with absolute certainty is that you should check/measure the pushrod length anytime you change components.

And these are the threads that I recently read through that led me to believe there is a slight difference between LS1 and LS7 lifters:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...er-length.html

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...-question.html

But the one question that remains unanswered for me is: Even if the difference is small, it could obviously affect the proper functioning of the motor--Why would GM offer this as a direct replacement without comment or mention of the need to check the preload?
