I recently purchased some ported 5.3 heads with patriot dual valves springs. I want to match it with a 224r cam from Texas speed and was wondering what other parts i will need to purchase for this head/cam swap. All i have done to my trans am so far is add a slp lid and a magnaflo catback exhaust. I will add longtube headers with a ORY before going forward with this setup. I was just wondering what else i would need or should do during the head and cam swap.
Sorry for the misspelling of the title..

So i will need to get new pushrods and a ls2 timing chain. Does the 224r cam require me to get new rocker arms as well? Do i need new head gaskets as well? My trans am has 94k on her now so I dont mind replacing certain parts in order to help my engine run reliably but im trying not to break the bank too much on this.

truth is...a cam is goanna break the bank. You get the impression that a $400 cam is all you need...
Until you realize pushrods, springs, ls2 chain, ls6 oil pump,
your up to $800+ before you know it. Not to mention thats assuming you install it, and the tune required.

Well i knew i would have to spend more than just the cam i just wanted to know exactly what to get in order to support it. I already have prc dual valve spring which are more than good enough for the 224r or 228r cam i just wanted to know what else to get too. I am taking it as i need upgraded pushrods, a new oil pump, and a new timing chain. I just wanted to know what else would be needed during this head and cam swap. This car is my daily driver and i am trying to build it up to have over 400 rwhp and still be able to drive it normally. I have saved up 1600 and am seeing how close I am to being able to afford all teh other parts. I have a very good local mechanic that will be doing the work with me. And afterwards I will have it tunedat MC racing as they seem to be the best around here in KC. I have a A4 with 3.23 gears. I do not currently have a torque converter but I am thinking of a circle D 3000-3200 torque converter. This one right here http://www.circledspecialties.com/p-...converter.aspx

Exactly^. If you get the $400 3000-3200 converter the 224r cam will be better. For a 228r you need a little more converter. Look around for a stall in the parts classified on here. The reason is you need to match your cam with your converter. For instance I have a 3400 converter so I am going with a 228r cam. Any higher I would need a 3600 or higher converter. If you only plan on getting a 3200 converter a 224r will be better for you setup. You should not even think about doing a cam on stock converter. It will pull threw the brakes at idle and run like ****. Matching your setup will get you best performance. Wich is why I'm getting FULL bolt-ons before I do cam swap.

Here is a 4k stall for $530 shipped. Don't know buyer just trying to help you out. Pretty good deal consider it's $725+ new. And this stall would go great with a 228r or even bigger cam. Don't forget you will need a $60 tranny cooler as well.

Wouldnt a 4k stall be quite a bit much for a daily driver though? I dont mind spending more to get more and i have been thinking of the 228r cam as an alternative.

I could DD my Yank SS4k easily. Its pretty tight around town, especially with 3.73s. You could have Chris at Circle D do a "tight" 3600 or look at a SS3600.

I'll be honest, I'm on a h/c setup with a 218 cam, 3400 stall, Livernois 243 heads with 1.82 rockers, and full bolts ons(ls6 intake, exhaust etc.....) and my car drives like stock. Flare the tranny up to 1100 or so and it's going like any other car, even with 2.73 gears!
I'm in the process of making mine more radical... For me, the 3400 stall and rest of the setup isn't wild enough for my personal taste on a weekend driver. I DD it occasionally and it's tame as a kitten for a 400ish rwhp car.
My point; depending on your tastes, saving a bit longer to do it once may be the best bet. Get all your ducks in a row like your trying to gather, and then go hog wild lol. A stall will be a must regardless and is just about as much of a dick as swapping the cam so try and learn what you want first.
I've ridden in a 3800 stalled 3.42 car and it seemed to drive pretty well at low speed so idk why 4000 would be too terrible.

consider the TSP cam kit with a cam/head install kit.you will also need a tune and bigger injectors.do you have a ls6 intake ?read alot threads and stickies about suspensions and drive train also.

i know its a late reply but thank you all for your advice. I ended up going with a 3600 circle d off another member. I think that would go great with the 228R cam so now i just have to save up for the cam and push rods
