I'm building an LQ4. I just bought a set of stock ls2 pistons from a guy and they only have a few hundred miles on them. The rings look good and ls2 rings are high end and expensive. I'd like to reuse the ones that came on the pistons. Of course if it's going to lead to problems I'd rather spring for new ones but I really think these are all right. What do you guys think?

They're about $250 from most places for stock replacements. They're nice. They have steel top rings. I've read that the Hastings moly ones are fine and they're less expensive so I'll probably go that route. Thanks y'all.

New rings NEED to seat to a FRESH cross hatch.....Ring seal is everything on
an internal combustion engine. Be sure to use a fine ball hone, fast up-down
motion w/drill, and any grade dino-oil. Wipe bores clean w/rags. Final clean
towel w/dexron. Lightly dab dexron on piston skirts and rings before assembly
Make double certain rings are in right grooves and dot mark side UP !!!!
If no dot on ring then it can go either side up, does not matter. Hastings are
good rings for mild performance builds.

What's funny about threads like this is that there is always one guy that comes in and says:
"Ive been reusing rings from 1987 and spin to 7200 and run 8's. Its just like TTY head bolts/150k mile stock lifters/10k old oil, its a scam by them to get more money"
Surprisingly no one has said that yet, and yes, this is a resounding no. new rings have to seat against a freshly honed cylinder wall.

I had a 355 that I built and sold to my buddy...engine was barely broke in and he got it hot and cracked a cylinder wall. Everything in that engine looked brand new...rings included. However upon tear down I purposely broke all the rings as I removed the pistons from the block just so I'm not tempted to use them again. I've made it a habit on every engine tear down I do.
Plus it relives stress. Lol

All right, all right. I'll get new rings. The block was professionally honed and decked. The crank was polished etc. etc. I guess I knew the answer to my own question but I won't even be tempted to try it now. I want to have a good finished product after all the work and money I'm putting into it. Hopefully if someone has a similar idea they'll find this thread and get the point so they don't have to ask a stupid question like me.

Since this is a pretty active thread, I'm going to ask my next question here rather than start a new thread. Has anyone ever had any trouble getting wrist pins out of floating pin style pistons? I'm taking mine apart to clean and lube them and some of the wrist pins are pretty stiff to get out. They're stiff enough that I have to tap them out with an extension and a rubber hammer. There's a little bit of black corrosion on the pins. Would it be alright to clean them up with scotch brite?
I might just take them to the machine shop and have them cleaned up since I have to get the rods honed for the ARP bolts.
My new rings are on their way as well as the one new piston I had to get. I'll be assembling this baby soon enough.
