Default valve seal install F*&K up??? (PICS)

i have stock guides and stock valves on my 241 heads. i have the comp cams valve seals #511... how hard do you have to tap these things to get them to completely seat? what size of socket do i use? im using a 3/8 deep socket to get them on and they seem to take alot of force when tapping to get them to seat completely. also i damaged some of the little springs that are on the seals, does that matter...

im pretty frustrated at the moment any help would be much appreciated.

If you use the correct size socket, and put a rag on top of the socket, you should just be able to push it down. You shouldnt need to "Tap" anything. I have always put a small ammount of oil on the inside of the seal to help it slide on. They fit tight enough that they wont come back off even with some lube on them.

Ive installed dozens of sets of these and it does take quite a bit of pressure when pushing them on, but they will go.

as far as the spring is concerned, yes....its important. you need to get a new set of seals.

dont take a chance on those.

They don't need much to seat them. I used a socket and small hammer and lightly tapped on them. You'll know when they are seated based on the change in sound when striking with a hammer. As soon as they are seated, it's more of a thud sound instead of pinging.

do i put the valve into place and then install the seals or do i leave the valves out when i install the seal?

i know its not rocket science but the hard stuff is easy for me alot of times which some how translates into the easy stuff being more difficult

Are those spring seats correct? They look like they can move all over the place.

you know i never really thought about that... i bought the springs used on this forum from another memeber. i guess i just figured the spring seat pressure would keep them in place. does anyone know what the correct ID is for the double PRC spring seats?

Ferrea makes a springs seat with a ID of .505" to fit the stock guide. I ran into this same problem but my springs seats were for beehive single springs but the only seats i could find with the correct ID for stock guides were the Ferrea's.

Thank You sir,
Ferrea part number SL1036 is exactly what i was looking for. Funny thing if i woldnt have messed up my valve seal install i would never have caught the seat locators being the wrong size...
Gotta love LS1TECH.com

No wonder your other post was so confusing. What wasn't caught was the fact that those aren't seats at all! Those are the ti retainers that go on TOP of the springs. You need to post a pic of all the spring parts you have contained in your kit.

You're not supposed to put them on as far down as they can go ,,,,,,,according to the book You install a new valve stem seal over the valve stem and press it down over the guide to the specified depth using hand pressure . Don't force the valve seal against the top of the guide . Don't You have a repair manual ?

Neh, those are definitely seats, just made for aftermarket (larger diameter) guides.

Just what I was thinking. The center is a bit large for a retainer I thought.

My spring locators are the wrong size as well. I valve seals were bad and I changed them. The motor started smoking again. Checked the seals and they were pulled off of the guides. Could the locators cause this problem?
