Default Oil Temp ?

Trying to decide where to set my High warning threshold on my new guages. What are the opinions on max Oil Temp with 10w-30. No oil cooler currently. Could be persuaded into one if the guage shows I need it. Car sees daily use in NC so 95* summers, 55-60* fall and usually a cold day or two in the winter.

Is it a good synthetic oil or regular?

For synthetic, anything under 260* is fine. Over that is ok for short periods of time, and anything over 280* is not ok and you should get an oil cooler.

Ok cool Im nowhere close to that. Its a good synthetic. Id rather not say just quite yet what brand just to not get into a brand war. It ran 190 down the interstate at two grand tonight in about 65* weather. I haven't really beat on it since Ive had the gauge in to find out a temp under heavy load.

@blk98vert -- That's not very good reasoning; just because our vehicles didn't come with something from the factory doesn't mean it isn't needed. However, I agree that an oil cooler would not be needed for most situations. Unless you are really flogging on it on a road course for extended periods of time.

right and that's where the true question lies. There aren't any good courses around here. But I would like to go to something at some point. autocross idk. its got full strano suspension and right now I'm only using it on interstate on ramps. Anyway Im wondering how long I can really beat on it before I see temps too high

I've seen oil temps as high as 250* on a 70* day with a few light to light runs. Without a oil cooler my oil would stay at that temp until I would threw it into 6th gear and cruised for awhile. So unless you drive the car "normal" i'd say a oil cooler isn't manditory, but it can help increase the life of the oil and possibly the engine.

FYI, you might want to run your oil over 212* sometimes just to burn off some of the condensation that gets in there.

Yeah I try to get it 212 plus. Thats the reason I didn't do a 160* water thermostat since the car is my DD. This is all good info guys and I appreciate it. I think I will look into an oil cooler setup after I attempt my true duals idea. Is there any possibility of not getting the oil hot enough in the cooler months?
