Lifters usually let you hear them before operating temps then it goes away. Bearings usually don't make a noise until operating temps.

Did you ever pull a valve cover?

How did you let it run low on oil in the first place? Don't the Camaro's have low oil level lights? My 98 TA does.....

As far as rod bearing, they won't always be noticeable at idle. Heck, I've had to rev a couple of them to 3K before I could hear any knocking before (non LSX vehicle).

This X2 and examine the oil once you change it when you do this. This should be done already if you haven't as it will give you a good diagnosis. Good luck hope it isn't a bearing or rod.

Mine was the complete opposite. When I had a lifter take a crap on me, I couldn't hear it at all on a cold start. About 5-10 minutes later, after the car was warmed up, I could hear the lifter tapping.

is said car a 98? I will assume so being a sport gold car.

same thing went on with a buddies 98 motor, installed camshaft and supporting mods, even a ported ls6 oil pump, just got done tuning with rev limiter set at 6600.

on his way home it started knocking, and just like you said, did not notice till the oil would get some heat in it.

its not going to get any better....

when my oil level got low in my car, the light came on, then i added like 2 quarts it was good, i did have a high volume oil pump as well. when you were driving the car hard did the oil pressure ever reach zero? because thats what would have caused this, but the check gauges light would have turned on.

Said car is not a 98, its a 2001. I bought another camaro to play with. But the oil pressure never dropped low while ripping on it.

Sounds to me like something else happened. He said he checked the oil and didn't drive it, then suddenly it was 2 quarts low. My money is on a spring seat broke and all the oil is leaking into the cylinder. You shouldn't get a massive amount of oil up there at once but after a few good hard pulls, its possible you lost 2 quarts thru a broken spring seat and didn't notice it.

Well, I recently went\am going through the exact same process you are but I'm a little ahead of where you are. 2k rpm was the magic number for me, also sounded perfect until I hit operating temp. Brought it to a few different places to get opinions, most said lifter but some said wrist pin.... I did notice the noise was favoring the upper passenger side so I started there. Pulled plugs, cylinder 6 was dead... Did a compression check and found nothing... Ran like crap, blowing soot out the exhaust. Failed the dollar bill test. Basically a dead miss. Decided to pull the head on the passenger side (Cylinder 6) first and found a bad lifter which chewed the cam lobe. I'm currently in the process of putting it back together after replacing the lifters, springs, pushrods, Cam, etc... I went ahead and installed a HV oil pump as well.. Hopefully, I will be cranking it back up in the next day or so as I am now recovering from the pickup tube bolt install. For those of you who have done this without dropping the oil pan you know what I mean. I would pull the plugs first, that will tell you everything you need to know. I'm no expert here but I'm willing to bet that noise your hearing is one of your lifters beating the cam.

So if this is the case, what all will I need? New lifters, new cam? Springs, pushrods, and cam have under 100 miles on them.

Also what oil are you using? Once had a truck come to me (sonoma) with a Loud knocking coming from the bottom. I guess whoever did the oil change last put 20w50 in it and **** was knocking, changed it to 5w30 and problem fixed, knocking never came back. Spoke to him 5 months after and nothing had came back. Shops were trying to sell him an engine too.

If the lifter failed, at the most you will need cam lifters and pushrods. I would invest in some lifter trays as well.
