I too would have to agree, under 4k RPM's in a stick car, the MS4 seems lazy. But man does it pull like a 13 year old in the shower after 4k RPM's.
If your wanting to get the most out of your cam, your gonna need to build the car to match the cam you select. An MS4 will require a Larger gear (Numerically higher) and that will make the driveability better, and help with low end power with it as well. Honestly, A smaller 230's duration cam and about .600" lift on a 112 (i.e. A tsp tqr 2 or Futral Motorsports F14 cam) would be very nice for you. Still retain a nice lope, and be very easy to drive. But that's just my honest oppinion.

Good Luck with it man!

Yea "living" wit a cam is what id call it...mines only 224/230 and it tends to wanna surge bc I have stock converte but unless u get a great tune u gotta live with it.low to mid 230 would ne rivht where u want I think. The comp xer273 im runnin has more hp and tq everywhere on the graph compares to stock but with 40 hp in the upper rpms
To me thats beat of both worlds...although I wanna use an ms4 in a race car and feel the freight train!

ive decided to keep the cam and get 3.90's, i think the stock gear is 3.46's so it will be a nice step up without going to drastic, i think 3.73 will be to close to stock to make a differance unless i got them for free, up for opinions

Considering it's in a vette... It's gonna pull really hard up top with that cam. And the 3.90's will help alot with low end torque loss. However traction will prolly suffer. Being a 6 speed, you could honestly go even higher on the gears and make it feel even more tame at part throttle though. But in the end it's up to you. GL with whatever you decide.

At least 3.90's. I'd be looking closer to the 4.10 range, or whatever the vette takes.

The OP has the M12 tranny which has the steeper 1st and 2nd gear ratios. There will be a little more use of 1st gear with the 3.90's. I was on the fence wether to go 3.90's or 4.10's and I chose the later. Next set-up will be 3.90's.

Wheel hop didn't change much at all but had to relearn some throttle control since "just dumping it" would light em up at will. That was with just CAI, LT's, and a tune.

i have the ms4 and i love it, just have to get the mods to support the cam, i drove about a 1000 miles a week over the summer and it wasnt to bad, it is not the cam i would put in a dd though, max effort cams need max effort parts, its one of the best cams when setup right , only a few set them up right though, still not a good dd imo.and honest over time im going to say your going to wish you went smaller, you can get a nice idle on a much smaller profile and will overall be better for a dd. but if your hardcore you will love it

Isnt the gearing in a z06 tranny differant than all other m6, I.think its 1st thru 3rd, shouldnt that make up a little differance, along with the 3.90's

Sure is...the M6 trans is the base trans for the C5 with the ZO6 getting the M12. 1,2,3, and I think 5th gear have a lower ratio in the M12.

IMO, the 3.90's in the Z' would be just about the same as 4.10's with an M6.

Put the cam in and get a good street tune, you might like it with your 3.42s. Going to the lower rear ratio would make up for the loss in low end torque.

I am running the ECS big NA cam and from what I'm told, is not quite as aggressive as the MS4. The driving manners are almost stock, 850 idle with just a hint of surge at 1500-1700. I can roll in 6th gear at 1000 rpms and you'd swear it was stock. Cruising around town, I'll go 1,3,5th with my 4.10s.
70 mph is at 2,100 rpms in 6th. Fuel mileage will take a small hit but then it's all in how heavy your foot is.

good luck.....

So I would assume that 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th would be like a 3.55 final drive or close to it with the trany being geared, just a guess anyone know.how.to break it down

What a great thread. I am new to the LS1 being that I just picked up my first one last week (2000 Camaro SS). I have a few buddies who have been into them for a few years and I cant believe the power gains these engines pick up just from a cam and spring swap! I google seached "Can an MS4 be daily driven" and this thread came up. It looks like I'm going to be going with a tamer cam for my soon to be daily driven SS. Hope to be making 400-450rwhp with LS6 intake-possibly a FAST 102 instead... AFR 205cc Heads and the "perfect cam" for street use.

Thanks for all the good info everyone. Coming from the small block ford community, LSx guys are much more technical!

Welcome man. Your gonna love LS1Tech!
Just get ready to be transformed FAST!
First you buy the car, then you hear another Camaro go by that sounds good, so what do you do.... ?? You look on LS1TECH for peoples oppinions for an exhaust for your car. Then a year goes by and your THOUSANDS of $$$$ deep into a modified street car that is faster than $hit. lol
Ask me how I know.
