Default CHEAP compression

What would be the cheapest way to gain compression on my 98 ls1? Milling the heads, 5.3 heads? I am carbed on a gmpp intake and am running e85 so I am looking to gain some cheap compression, what is a good amount to mill off a ls1 head before it starts to affect performance?

cheapest will def be milling your current stock ls1 heads, because the only other way is to buy ls6 heads and mill ($500+) or get 5.3 heads and get ls1 size valves ($300+)...cheapest will be mill your ls1s and use thinner head gaskets

300 to do seats on 8 valves? Not sure where you have been getting machine work done but I'd say its time to find a different shop.

A set of 5.3 heads can be had for under 100 bucks in most cases, and having ls1 intake valves installed shouldn't run you much more than another 100. For what it's worth, I had guides and seats put in all 16 on a set of ls1 heads about a year ago and it cost of 200. That included a mill.

Damn that's cheap. I just got a quote from the only machine shop in town to do a valve job on a set of 243's and they quoted me 350. What's a good price?

Sorry for the hijack OP.

Whats the most I can take off my ls1 heads? I want max compression. Can I make 11.5 compression by milling and thin gaskets?

Safely you can take .020"-.030", but with that being said I have over .040" milled off of my 241's they are cut down to a 57cc chamber

Id put my money into increasing cylinder head flow, not compression. Flow is much more important to increasing power potential of an engine, especially since your doing a head swap already.

Buy the BEST heads you can afford, if you cant afford good heads then save for however long it takes without doing any mods. Itll pay dividends in the end.....

I agree with what your saying, but my wallet does not and the fact I think that the money spent milling my heads will gain me CHEAP power due to me running e85. I might port these heads but aftermarket heads arent happening. anybody know what a 0.40" mill on my heads and a thin head gasket would yeild as far as compression?

No but I know running gasolene if You went from 8 to 11/1 and You have 300 HP at 8/1 ,,,,,You only gain maybe 30 hp so how much can You gain with e85 ,,,,,,,,maybe 60 hp ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,with a set of 300 or $400 243's and a cam You can gain over 100HP and with bolt-ons another 30-50hp actually more than that . You can go from say 350 flywheel HP to 450 to the wheels which is close to 175 flywheel HP gain . And if You raise You're compression really high now ,,,,,You're stuck with that compression unless You buy more heads or go with thicker gaskets and screw You're quench ,,,,,,anyway good luck

.040 off and a .040 gasket will get you about 10.8:1

I prefer to not remove more than .030 off any ls oe heads.
Look into the gm l33 5.3/5.7 mls head gaskets for your motor

Power gains from compression increase is typically about 3% per full point. So even a full point compression bump on a 500hp engine would only be 15hp.

Your looking to go up less than a point and probably not on a 500hp engine. I still think you should save your money for good heads, with the chamber size you want as well.
