Default Budget LQ4 with 243 Heads...NOW WITH DYNO RESULTS!

I picked up a nice LQ4 with 80k miles to go in my 6-speed Z28. I'm not going to do a complete rebuild, as both oil pressure and compression are both good.

I'll be putting on some 243 heads that are being cleaned up by West Coast Cylinder Head...Basic resurface, valve job and some new guides but no CNC, as I'm on a budget. I'm also installing new lifters and an LS6 oil pump, but now I have to figure out what I'm going to do for a cam. I'm looking for something that will be more potent than the 359 RWHP I get from my LS1 (see sig for mods), but I don't want to totally destroy my highway gas mileage, nor do I want to replace springs every 20,000 miles. I'd like to get over the 400 RWHP barrier while still meeting the above requirements.

Any suggestions for a cam that will do this?

Dodson probably has the cam you want, or something close to it...whatever cam you go with keep your lift under .600", the ramp rates will make your springs last longer.

Plus you can go a little longer duration with your bigger cubes and still have very good street manners.

subscribe to see what you wind up with.

I'm running a rebuilt LQ4, ls6 oil pump, ls6 intake, tsp stg 2.5 ls6 heads, and a tsp 228r (228/228 .588", 112lsa)

it's not in yet, but I'm hoping to be near or over 400whp with it. I'm dropping it off tomorrow to have it finished up a bit. Gonna be a while before it goes in tho.

And the TSP cam mentioned by Dodson doesn't have super-aggressive ramp rates? I know there's power to be had there, but I'd rather leave it on the table than have to worry about broken springs!

Will do! It's behind an A4 tho, and to a 2.73 rear so my results will vary to yours, you already have a better setup than I do to drop into.

I'm debating if I should wait on an 80e swap or just run my 60e, that and some misc. odds and ends (you know.. couple grand of odds and ends ) are all that's holding it up.

I had the heads milled .030. I'm shooting for ~11:1 compression on this motor.

I went with the EPS 234/246. Should be finished in a few weeks.

LQ4, 234's, LS6 Intake.

Why 243s? With a 4" bore I would try and get the LY6/LS3 heads...

Because I'm on a budget and I already had the 243s.

Stage 2.5 PRC 243's and a TR224 made 378rwhp with a stock LS6 intake on my car. Swapping the cam out right now for a 231/234 EPS spec'd by Pat G.

did you have any mill work done on the heads? What compression were you pulling on this?

224s a pretty mild cam for the 6.0s, good numbers none the less tho.

Would love to hear what you hit with the new cam.

Pat-G will spec you a cam that will meet all your goals .with the extra cubes it can be mild.

I had a LQ4 shortblock with TSP Stage 2.5 LS6 heads and LS6 intake in my old WS6. Pat G spec'd me a cam for it....238/242, .604/.605 lift on a 112+4. Very streetable, and rolled out. No dyno #s or track times, though...

Here's a clip. Cutout opens around 35 seconds in...
