The 5.7 ls1 is actually 346 cubic inches. The 5.3 and 6.0 are derivatives of the LS1 and are used in the truck line primarily.
The 5.7 LS1 is the one used in f bodies and vettes. It's the high ouput high performance all aluminum while the 5.3 and 6.0 are used in trucks and I think they use a steel block with aluminum heads.

Well if you look at the 5.3 you see a normal if not good 15% drivetrain loss. This is what you'd expect, actually a little better but still normal. Now if you look at the 5.7 liters loss using the factory numbers it'd be only 3% !!!! Of course we know that's impossible, it has to have the same parasitic drivetrain loss as everyone else about 15% or so. That would give it a crank HP rating of about 347 - 350 hp, in other words the same as the Vette Gm just severly underrated it to preserve the ego of the vette. So I think it's safe to say that it isn't a rumor

I agree with 316, in addition it helps keep the insurance premiums to an ungodly level, not an unobtainable level. I knew a 30+ female schoolteacher with an impeccable driving record that would have been hit up for around $200 per MONTH if she had gotten the V-8 in her f-body! This "underrating" goes back to the old muscle car era and the adoption of the numerical systems. W-37 code in a Firebird slipped under the insurance radar and let the public own a real street car back then without the underwriters laughing them out of the office.
