the LS2 is not the factory replacement for the old LS1 timing chain. anytime you go in the motor, and swap a cam it is a good idea to change the timing chain. it is what holds the crank and cam together, if that breaks, you will likley tap every valve, if not break some pistons. i got my new LS2 timing chain for 40 bucks, no reason not to replace it.

Actually if you read some of the archive post, The LS2 chain is the LS1 replacement. They are not made any more as are the lifters. I too thought people were using the LS2 chain and LS7 lifters as "upgrades" which in fact they are, but the actual stock parts are no longer avail so you really don't have a choice in the matter. If you go to GM and order an "LS1" chain, they will give you the LS2 chain.

The LS2 chain's links are actually a little more beefier. Like metioned, they stretch over the years and I would be more concerned about that than it breaking. A new chain can break just as easily and the old one. If your car has moderatly high mileage, it is a good idea to replace those parts because you are already there.

Do the oil pump too while you're in there.

LS1 chain is on the left compared to the LS2 chain on the right.

the picture above tells all its a much better piece then the factory chain that now has 60,000 miles on yours. Also stated they do tend to stretch with higher milage not saying your wont be fine but its one less thing to worry about going wrong.

It's not the chain that rubs, its the oil pump because of having to shim where the pump mounts to the block so it will clear the chain on the backside. Forcing the pump towards the front cover causing clearance issues.

The SLP double roller and oil pump combo is specially machined to fit under the stock timing cover. No other double roller and pump combo can say that.

Seriously, a good single roller is all you need. The double rollers for LS engines are over rated.

Do you happen to know if the LS7 or LS3 are using single or double chains?
