Your pistons look cleaner than i would have expected to see. It looks like you have GMs MLS head gaskets. Can you find a casting # on the heads ? I would take your heads to a machine shop and let them clean and inspect the heads. Replace the valves seals, check the guides, and let them vacuum test the heads..

What size was the block honed to ? 3.903 3.905 ?

Talk to them about thickness between the 2 gaskets to get the best for your setup.

the issue I'm having is different then. but I maybe have installed too small of a head gasket. I've got afr 230 heads and put ls9 (4.100 bore) gaskets on the setup. AFR says the minimum needed it 4.125 and recommends 4.135
