Default 4.8 Cam Help

So I need help deciding on a cam. The motor is a 4.8L going into a ’67 Camaro at approx 3,100 lbs that will be my DAILY DRIVER once completed. I have some ported and polished truck heads with 2.02 intake valves that were also milled .040” that will be going on this motor. The car is getting a MA5 manual trans that is not close ratio so I would like to get a cam that has a good power band. My goal is for a fun DD with around 400HP & 30MPG so a cam that has great drivability and minimal negative impact on mileage is needed. I’ve been thinking a TR220 114 would be perfect for my setup but somebody has offered me a good deal on a custom ground Lunati 218/222 .56x .56x 111. I like the specs of the cam but am worried about what the 111 LSA will do for the power band. I know the guys over on PerformanceTrucks are the 4.8 experts but looking for input from guys who drive light cars.

Thanks.

A tr220, or even bigger tr224 would probably work great in your car...but a good deal on the 218/222 would work great too....the tight lsa would make the cam sound more noticable, and power would come on earlier so I wouldn't shy away from it either

Thanks, that's what I am thinking too. I just want to make sure it's something that is going to pull up top too.

With that size cam you will get good gains all across the whole rpm range.....also you will need valve springs....look at either comp 918's or pac 1218's

Great, I think I will go with it then. I have some brand new matched LS9 springs from LPE (good to .580) that I plan on running with the cam. Thanks for your help.

Ok cool they will work, as long as the springs are good to more lift than the cam is...which yours are!

I run a 218/218 112 cam in my stock 4.8. Not by choice, but it was better than stock when I was putting the engine in. It is still making power at 6200rpms where I shift.

Cool, I have also swapped to an LS1 intake so that might be able to help it breathe a little better than the truck intake on the top end, but let's not turn this into another intake manifold discussion thread. lol

I have a 214/222 .559/.568 I would sell you. It would make gains over stock thru-out the rpm range and pull to over 6K. It will work with the LS9 springs too.

I had this cam in my camaro for about 5k miles, It's in perfect condition. I just want to go bigger. (I still got 28mpg highway A4, 3:23)

BTW thats a badass sounding project. I have wanted to put a 4.8 in a light car for a while, I've been looking for a RX7 FD roller. Keep us updated

Lol looks like uou did what I did at first....too small for a 5.7, but would work great in a 4.8!

If my purchase falls through on the Lunati I will definitely hit you up!

Thanks for the props on the build, I've been wanting to do this for a long time.

I know the LS6 intake is the way to go, the only reason I got rid of the truck intake was for clearance. Just can't justify $400 for an intake manifold to gain 15HP over the $50 LS1 manifold right now. Plan on switching over in the future after the car is on the road.

So I am not disappointed my goal is 400 crank, don't think that will be an issue with my heads and that Lunati grind. Just want the car to be fun and get good mpgs.

I swapped a 5.3 into an S10 and used the LS1 intake for the same reason. My buddy gave it to me when he swapped to a LS6 in his TA. It will flow just fine for what you're looking to do.
