oil pumps
Reading the issues with oil pumps, now I’m paranoid. Anyone know what fails on the oil pumps? What would be an adequate replacement? Where would be a good place to get one, and what’s the going cost? I'm having the heads P/P, getting mild cam, changing to LS6 PCV. Might as well replace the pump while I’m in there. thanks

Have you ever disassembled one of these pumps? There isn't a whole lot to them. They are very basic in design in that they only have a DRIVE and DRIVEN gear. There is on overpressure relief, but if it opens that's NOT a failure. That's the way it's supposed to work. If the overpressure spring is too weak that's another story. If the piston gets stuck in the open position due to a burr in its' bore that's also a problem, but by the time that happens you have already reached on overpressure condition which should not happen on a properly serviced engine. The oil pump is self-lubricating because in doing its job of pumping oil it lubricates itself at the same time. I don't know how long it would take to wear one of these things out due to normal wear and tear, but I'd be willing to bet it would be in the hundreds of thousands of miles assuming the oil is changed at regular intervals. Even the oil filter mounting boss has an additional over pressure bypass in the event the filter becomes clogged due to lack of maintenance. The stock pump puts out approx 40 lbs, which is a lot more than needed at idle, because the pump rides on the crankshaft rather than on the cam which only spins at half speed.

I am in the middle of doing my second oil pump swap in about 6 months...
I have not idea why 2 oil pumps have gone out in that amount of time. The first was the stock pump, so I replaced it with a ported LS6 pump and it's gone bad as well...
Like has been said there really isn't much that can go wrong with them???
Anybody have any ideas????

Im in the middle of a cam swap, and I replaced my stocker 98 pump with a stock LS6 pump. I got it for like $68 which is not bad when you consider it can save you a $$costly$$ rebuild.
