Takes a lot to mill that much off of a 317 when you can take .030-.045 off a 241 or 243 and get higher static compression than you can with nearly twice as much off the 317's. You run out of material to mill and personally I'd like as much material on my heads as possible for deck sealing.

Don't quote me on it, but I think once you mill as much as needed off the 317 heads to get Thursday compression up you lose the combustion chambers desired shape and start shrouding the valves

I prefer the 799 casting in a budget situation over the 243's.
Mainly because they can be found a LOT cheaper than 243's and aside from the foundry they were cast in they are the same head.

317s are the most underrated heads in LS family . These heads in the hands of of top shelf porter can turn out some great numbers. If your is goal is peak compression go with 243 , but on a budget 317s milled .030 to .040 and hand ported will do the job. The comparison should be milled 317s vs stock 243s .

aare you running with just heads and cam or do you too have boost? if not hows it pulling compared to stock layout?
