317's or stay with 241's on ls1? budget build
Im just looking to do a head and cam swap on my car, but i would like to keep my cost as low as possible for now. Im leaning toward a TSP 224r cam and the 317 heads. I found a pair of 317's in town for 150$.
My question is, will the 317's lower my compression and cause a loss in power? should i pay more for 243's? keep budget in mind.... I definitly want to upgrade from the stock heads. Give me you input, it is very much appreciated. Im in california also, i want to be smog legal as well.

I had my 317's milled 0.060", and ran a 227/235 113+2 cam with them. PTV was checked with stock MLS gaskets and tight but ok with good springs, about 0.065" on the intake about 0.080" on the exhaust. It picked up almost a full point of compression over the stock 806's that came on my car. For $150 bucks plus the cost of milling probably isn't a bad combo if you want to stay low buck. Not a smog legal cam there though, you would need somthing a little smaller.

And that would even depend on how much. I've run .025 cut 241s that pulled harder then stock 799s. Milling the living crap out of a set of 317s isn't the first class ticket to a great set of heads.

Not a newb, but for around $250 you can have a set of heads that flow as well as the 243/799 and have the same compression ratio. No, they are not exact copies, but close enough that the difference in airflow wouldn't be detected by a butt dyno. I guess it boils down to your budget and cam you choose.....

I prefer the 799 casting in a budget situation over the 243's.
Mainly because they can be found a LOT cheaper than 243's and aside from the foundry they were cast in they are the same head.
I can guide you in the right direction as far as cam wise and can put you a cam package together for 690+shipping.
