Would you take the motor apart? Just picked up an LQ4 out of a '07 with 150,000 on it. I plan to swap it in my jeep after doing a few mods to motor. These LS based engine swaps have become extremely popular in of the off roading world. most people just pull a motor and dump the LS in without opening up the motor. I have already pulled the heads of motor and everything looks great. my question is should i continue to disassemble motor or just leave it and run it.

I agree with mark, throw some new lifter and trays in, new head gaskets and call it good. Going any further on your rebuild and your going to incur about $600-$800 in "fees" (hone, re size rods, polish crank, ect...) if you want to rebuild it correctly

well damn, I pulled the cam last night, cam bearings are not in great shape, the cam is junk due to bad lifter. I still have the rotating assembly in it. a few of the holes have a light scratch at the bottom of the stroke. Pics to come later tonight. I dont feel like spending $5K on a motor with all the machining needed to make it perfect to only have a 450 hp motor.
Can I just put a new set of rings in it and call it a day? it is already getting a new cam, lifters, springs, cam bearings, and lifters. still kicking around idea of milling the 317 heads.

Well, depends on how bad things are. If your cam got chewed up by a lifter and the cam bearings aren't looking all that hot, I would wonder about your rod and main bearings. My first thought would be the debris tore up the rods and mains too. Not for sure, but that would be my fear based on your description. Kinda hard to know at this point what it would take to get it back going. Might get away with $1000 in it or it might be 2 to 3 times that. Junkyard motors are always a gamble particularly if you can't hear it run.

1. head bolts, $90/all 30
2. head gaskets, $60(somehow the 4inch bore units are double the 5.7/5.3 set)
3. lifter trays $30/all 4
4. Lifters $130, use the GMPP part number
5. Cam, $50-400
Pull crank/rods, inspect/replace bearings? I would
who runs a TrailBlazer SS to 150k miles? that's some driving
I'm seeing a few 100k LS motors puking lifters, some score the cam and you wouldn't know it until pulling the cam, one lost the roller(dead cyl., that one you could notice
