GM recognizes Kendall and Brad Penn. Personally i recommend Kendall.

Take a look:
You can't go wrong with what you're using but I'd pass on some of the oils on the GM list. Walmart Supertech? Seriously??

I know, i saw that as well. Makes you question the validity but that is what they support. They designed the motor so i would hope they know what they are doing over there

It is all about the Money boys.

Like I said I have 310,000 miles on my LS1 using Mobil1. To each his own, it's your money spend it how you feel.

345689 on my odometer. On stock longblock, as I checked earlier. I use synthetic 20w50.
Use m1 10w30 in any ls hi Hp motor. That's all you need. Over 10yrs that's what I've used in ls cars

I have 250,000 + miles on the original short block using Mobil 1 10-40. The car is a heads/cam and all the bolt ons dailey driver making 452/418. The oil and filter changed at 5,000 mile intervals. Oil consumption has been 1/2 quart every 2,500 miles since the car was brand new. Oil use threads are always interesting to say the least.

I pay $97 for a case of LS30. What does a case of M1 cost?

Off topic a bit but what are thoughts on adding a zinc additive to oil? I think amsoil makes an additive.

2 oil filters $10.00

Every 10,000 miles it costs me $38.00 to use Mobil1 oil.

It's my understanding that zinc is needed only when using old school flat tappet lifters. GM engines have had roller lifters since the early ninety's.

Wasn't it also established that zinc oils can damage catalytic converters?

Zinc is good for PR and lifters. I did run a additive unill I started using LS30.

The Goverment is behind the ruining of good off the shelf oil.

All my ls stuff takes 6 quarts so It costs me $50 plus a wix filter I buy in bulk for $3

We change the oil in dads every 5000. Mine gets changed in the spring 1000 miles or so.

Where do you find 5-30some m1

Here in the NYC/Long Island area, we're lucky that both Pep Boys and Auto Zone carry GC. AND both often have sales of Castrol Syntec with a shitty toss away filter (usually some version of Fram) and the quarts end up costing about $6.50 each.

The Fleetguard filter I use is about 15 bucks so with six quarts, I'm looking at $54.00 for an oil & filter change.

I perform a change when the oil starts turning pretty dark (but not black), not by mileage or time.

Not so much, but heading in the right direction.

Do some reading on zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) and you'll have a better understanding of extreme pressure lubricant additives. They do more than just lubricate the cam lobe to lifter interface.

There are no off-the-shelf API-spec oils I can find that do not contain zinc & phosphorous in some concentration, it's just a lot less than it was back in API SL and prior specs.

And GM was putting roller lifters in their L98 and some 305ci engines as early as 1987.

Good info and thanks to all u guys inputs. I'm kinda new to the ls motors so I know the colder the oil better car runs and I learned that these cars need to have a great valisity index oil and from my understanding and research the joe gibbs ls30 has. I will be using this oil and u can see a member posted he gain .1 in the quarter mile so I guess an oil change from the oil he was using and gain a tenth is great. U guys might say oil is oil but I brought this motor used and the previous owner whom is my buddy said he use mobile one extended performance oil and after about 30-40 passes he had spun a bearing maybe the clearances wasn't right but he said they don't make the oil like they use to and he will never run it again he is switching to v1 valviline oil. I told him I'll try this one out to see temps and how it performs. He now has a 441 Lsx with trickflow 245 and now that I have just rebuilt the 408 he had and went a little bit over on bore so now it's a 410 with the new trickflow 245 heads I brought along with fast 102 I hope I can break this thing into the 9s na

GC all the way. The SuperTech from Walmart is just Mobil 1 rebranded and is a much cheaper alternative.
