what the hell is this?! came out on the drain plug *pics inside* please help!
When i bought the car, it made 437whp and 413wtq i was told. it was put on an etest tune to pass etest. and without thinking about it, i never got it retuned for power again.
we got it on the dyno and the afrs were off the charts lean, and i beat the **** out of the poor girl like that all last year. yeah, i know, im an idiot. it made 421whp and 41xwtq. we retuned it for perfect afr across the board, and got it to 419whp and 395wtq, but wit ha good safe tune. but ive now noticed gas mileage sucks worse than before.
last year, the valvetrain was getting noticabley louder, and this year it has gotten just ridiculous. so changing the oil today, this is what came out on the drain plug... sorry for huge pictures.
and this is how it came out on the drain plug..
the last oil change i switched from what the last owner said he ran the whole time (penzoil 10w30 non synthetic) to mobil1 5w30 full synthetic. and was about to run the same today until i saw this...
this bearing looking thing has some wear on it where it looks like its been tossed around in there.. and along with this little bearing looking thing, was some metal shavings on the drain plug... i stuck a magnet in the oil pan and didnt collect anything else.. but if this was from the top end, how the hell does it get in the drain pan??
the oil was under the safe zone about a quart for a little while. i got lazy and stupid and didnt get the oil, because i didnt have an oil leak and its never burned it off on me, and it usually stays golden brown or brownish.. the last two oil changes have been black.
please, someone help me figure out what this is... ive been thinking of rebuilding or replacing the motor for a turbo build for a while, so is that basically what my next step is?
with the afr 205s, i was told the stock valvetrain is still in it (because it holds more power up high?) this is some scary **** man... any advice is of course much appreciated... please help guys.

I've never seen the carnage from a rocker bearing failure, imo it looks to large to be one of those, but that and the timing chain are about the only things inside the engine that could've come from...I'd be pulling the valve covers and rockers and start there...good luck

The cam dowel pin is what it looks like to me. I don't think it's the source of your noise. You have other issues. A pin like that would put the put a stop to the engine quick getting lodged between the gears and chain. Making it safely to the pan wouldn't cause a problem

It is too big to be a needle bearing from a rocker or a lifter.
Measure it with calipers and we can tell you if it is a cam dowel pin. Cam dowel is .248-.250 od. About 1/2" long.
It could have been in the pan for a long time...who knows.
Can't imagine one just falling out, they are pressed in.

If it measures around .298 in diameter it could be an axle from a lifter bearing assembly. Judging by the clean chamfer on the end of the pin, it would have to be a clip style retainer vs. being swaged for it to be from the lifter. Otherwise it's from another component in the engine.

Take it to a parts store, and look at a stock replacement lifter. Look where the roller is, that's what it looks like to me. I highly doubt it's a cam dowel they are pressed in and don't exactly fall out. Plus you said your valve train has gotten louder.... First thing I would do is pull your crank pulley off, water pump and timing cover. Check to see if cam dowel is there, if not.....well you know what it is then.
If you we're looking to go bigger/turbo now may be your time.

30 seconds of research has revealed to me why there are two butt hurt nut swingers chiming off in here in support of the simpleton OP:

Priceless. ******* priceless...
I don't mind listing oil as a modification if it keeps the engine together.
PS. The Camaro is my wife's car.
