Default Creating a monster

Thinking about getting my stock ls1 heads fully hand ported flowing around the 320cfm range and going with a mildly aggressive cam maybe a 230/230 112 lobe separation @ a 580-598 lift any suggestions I would like to at least make n/a 415-420 rwhp with an a4 3500 stall ptc converter 3:73 gears 1 7/8 longtube ebay headers no cats or egr maybe just keep the stock ls1 intake port the stock throttle body making it 80mm.Btw my car is still a bone stock 99 z28 just would like to get everyones input on a killer budgetable build cuz I'm a poor boy.I have a friend who is a head porting wizard who told me just stick with the stock heads and he'll port the **** out of em and with the cam combo get an ls1 oil pump he'll port what needs to be ported beehive springs steel retainers use the stock pushrods. He's got this similar combination in his lq9 t/a making killer power.

Might as well plan on l s6 intake. And remember, you gotta pay to play. Numbers in the 420 area through a stalled a4 are some pretty good numbers. In my opinion, stock 243s are the best 'budget' build.

Port your heads, mill them to 61.5cc's, use a stock head gasket, LS6 intake and a ported TB for the induction side.

For a good streetable cam that will hit your goal look at my Stage 2 "Street Heat' camshaft for 346-364 c.i. engines. It is 231/238 .61x"/.61x" 113+3 and produces killer mid-range torque without sacrificing any low end over the stock cam and makes power to 6400-6500 rpm with a LS6 intake. With the LS1 intake it will most likely peak at 6100-6200rpm and lose about 10-20rwhp over the LS6. May as well port either intake you use while you're at it.

I would never use stock push rods with an aftermarket cam. You're just asking for trouble there.

I have a cam package that includes much better Brian Tooley Racing dual springs rated for .660" lift that have never had a reported failure since they were put into use in 2005(unprecedented over the competition) and Manley .080" wall 5/16" push rods for 679.99. You can add a LS2 timing chain to that for 44.99 also.

Thanks y'all, I believe Martin's plan sounds like the way to go.I was planning on keeping the stock heads and having them ported and milled, but would it benefit me more going with 243 ls2 heads fully ported and I'm sure they will have no issues with the gasket clearance that's what I'm afraid of with the stock heads opening them up as far as they will go.I know 243's are gonna cost me but they have more material and better casting to work with without worrying about gasket clearance issues. Luckily I don't have to worry about spending large sums of money getting the portwork done since I've helped out my buddy a lot in the past. And he has some decent connections including a guy that custom grinds cams. Thanks again guys!!

You'll NEVER get a LS1 head (806/853/241) to 320cfm, not even on a >4" bore.

By the way Martin that ain't a bad price at all for a great cam package including springs and pushrods! I was also concerned about which oil pump to go with.My friend who is an engine builder and head porter swears up and down the ls1 oil pump is the way to go he said it's because the ls6 pump has too much volume and all the oil stays in the crankcase not allowing the lifters springs pistons valves etc to stay lubricated properly. He also said its way too much oil pressure as well.He has a ported ls1 oil pump in his lq9 and it's a monster!I'm no mechanic by no means but he's been around the block a time or two and I trust his word. Either or I'm def going with an ls6 intake,I've seen proven performance out of them versus an ls1.

No offense to your friend but that's simply not accurate. The ls6 pump has been in every ls1 engine since 2001 you cant even buy a stock ls1 gm pump anymore it will only be an ls6. Literally thousands of people run ported ls6 pumps with no issues. There really isnt such a thing as too much oil pressure, for it to be dangerously high you would need much more psi than any stock style pump could put out. My ls6 pump puts out around 60 at idle and pegs to 85 ish on WOT and its been great.

I agree.

We use the LSA oil pump from the new super charged CTS-V's for our "standard volume" oil pump and we order a special ported LS6 pump for our "high volume" oil pumps.

Fine408 if you like that cam package price hit me up and we can get you squared away with one!
