Default Bought used arf heads on here.. this is what i got.. What to do?

So i bought a pair of used afr heads off this site. And they were aspose to be here on the 15th... finally show up today on the 25th, SO i take them straight to a machine shop to have them looked at and he pointed out between the valves was coming apart, And asked them can this be fixed or what should i do.. He told me should research it first. so im starting by posting it here.. Thinking i might need to send these back. Since when i bought them i was only told they need to be cleaned and that was the only thing wrong with them and had 13k miles and where stock. but curious what others opinion ab out this is. Or if this is normal with these heads?

oh boy. Sorry to hear about that, that is my fear buying used parts you can't look at before handing over the money. I don't understand what "coming apart" means - I am wondering if that is the result of a manufacturer defect or detonation? I'd first call the seller and find out the truth about the heads and why they were removed if he will tell you. find out if he will do anything about this issue. If the seller wont do anything you will just have to allow the machine shop to tear them down and clean 'em up to see how bad it is and figure out how to repair. Good luck

Those things look whiped! I figured you could clean em up and basically just use the castings, but they do look broken / damaged between the intake and exhaust valves.

I'd try to get you money back..I wouldnt want to put any money into these

It almost looks like it is just where the valve seats are pressed in...bigger seats for bigger valves...is pull the valves and clean, then pressure test the heads

It's not a difficult fix, but you may try to work it out so the previous owner helps out

The casting is real thin there. Just the protrusion left after machining for the seats.
I doubt it is a problem.
Would be nice to see them cleaned first though. And then what the valves, seats and guides look like.

Certainly looks like more than 13K miles. Either that or the short block was toast. That is a lot of deposits.

Well, if you would have bough AFR instead of these ARF heads, you wouldn't have this problem Clean that one up first, then take another pic.

most likey there fine

clean check test if fine lightly polish the area to get any sharp edges off

They can be fixed to ive seen this happen in alot of higher power race engines. Not cheap to be fixed right.

I would just grind it down a tad and run em. That jagged edge even without the flaw is a detonation point. It looks like the engine was detonating anyways.

My guess is nitrous with too much timing because it does not look like it was running lean.

I am thinking.
If the "machinist" makes that kind of "diagnosis" without cleaning them up, and doing the inspection the correct way, you don't need to be dealing with him.............

Agreed. You are at the wrong machine shop. The right machine shop will know exactly how to fix it.

Those heads have had a hard life. They can be fixed. But if they were mine I would get my $$$ back. I have a set of TEA heads with 125,000 miles on them that look brand new. (heads not 4 sale)

PS Find another machine shop too.
