Default Lq4 with 243 heads?

I got a very budget build and over winter I want to get more power out of my summer daily driver. My lq4 is in great shape and low milage stock with ls6 intake,228r cam 112lsa,truck maf,all else stock.Dyno numbers in sig.

Im picking up 243 heads to raise compression and getting longtube headers and make a custom y pipe, maybe new ls7 lifters/trays.My question is about the heads,Ill be reusing the rockers/springs/valves from my 317 heads with the pac springs. Can I reuse the tsp 7.4 hardened pushrods aswell? What head gasket is recommended and if I decide to mill the heads(.030) and do some porting will I need new pushrods again?I want to reuse what i have since I only put 100km on it this year since being installed.Im not looking to make a ton of power..just crack the 400rwhp mark and have a snappy response.

Any advice is welcome.

Pushrods will change when you swap heads, mill, and run a different gasket. I would measure your ptv clearance and mill accordingly.

If I dont mill the heads, just have them ported, run a stock gasket then Id be able to run the same rods correct?

No I don't think so because the 317 heads are 71cc and the 243 heads are 64cc.

^lol, if you dont know then STFU

heads all have the same rocker pad height when stock. If you dont mill and go to a thinner gasket, you will still be fine. If you mill you will need to get a shorter pushrod

Thats what I thought..317/243 heads all else being the same except chamber size.If I dont mill the heads the I can literally reuse everything from my 317 heads, and replace the gaskets with new gm gaskets for the 6.0

How much gain can I realistically expect from just the stock 243 and 1 3/4 lts? Im expecting a healthy 30-40whp

Yea you might get that, but you realllly though consider milling or a thinner gasket. Compression is power and easy to do at this point!

I understand the more compression the better, not looking for high hp.Just a slight bump up without sacrificing the stuff I just bought this year lol.

Pushrods are cheap. Mill the heads, measure for pushrod length and run a .040 gasket and enjoy. Don't run anything less than a .040 gasket or you will run your quench too tight.

Ideally if I do mill them I think .030 would be a good bump up for the lq4 and the 228r cam.Plus longtubes should really help the motor in throttle response and bottom/mid range power.

sounds like a nice setup, how do you like it? Do you mind me asking what power it put down and since you milled .030 and using stock gasket..what pushrod length did you need?

If you're looking to crack the 400rwhp mark, that combo should do it whether you mill the heads or not. Your combo will be about as close as you can get to an iron block LS2.

It should be on the button 400rwhp.Right now having my stock manifolds and having clogged cats mixed with a poor tune has me leaving alot on the table.Headers with 3inch y pipe to my 3inch catback,243 heads with slight port work/milled,build a true cold air intake, might need new injectors and might port the throttle body should get me there after a new tune.If I hit 399.9rwhp Id be pissed to be that close lol

I'd still use that 228r cam, mill the 243's and get a fast......no problems hitting 400+ and I'm pretty sure it will make closer to 420... if ur gonna have it returned might as well do all ur mods at once and be done with it

Fast intake just isnt in the budget..nor do I think I need it for my goal.If I tear the motor down again after doing 243 heads and lt headers..it will be for an ls3/l92 topend overhaul and a bigger cam n/a..aiming over 450rwhp.Im far from that though.

You shouldn't have a problem making your power goals with the LS6 intake.
