Default 01 Z28 Camaro - Heads n Cam decision...

I have a 01 mainly stock z28 with a rebuilt Jasper engine and SLP lid. The car has 88k original miles and about 15k on the rebuilt motor with the 4l60e automatic, stock converter. Im looking for that magical 500hp mark and mainly use the car for weekend crusing and maybe a trip or two to work on occasion, (15 min drive). I wanna know if that if a mustang pulled up next to me at a red light there wouldnt be any doubt in my mind that id have enough power to take care of bussiness. My overall budget for engine, trans, suspention is around 4500-5000.. I was looking at TSP's PRC Stage 2.5 LS6 CNC Ported Heads http://texas-speed.com/p-4-prc-stage...ted-heads.aspx and Texas Speed 228R 228/228 .588"/.588" Camshaft http://texas-speed.com/p-1148-texas-...-camshaft.aspx . Im looking to buy TSP's 1' 7/8 headers and Dual exhaust dumped. Im also lookin to install a 2500-3000 stall. Im also looking for that distinct aggressive lope.. While not sacrificing low end power.. Im rather new to the 4th gen camaros and LS seriers of engines and would love everyones input on my goal to 500+hp.

That budget is going to be hard to hit 500whp and do trans and suspention work. Drop your goal to 420 ish and you could probably do that. That is if you look for deals and do all the work yourself.

If you want 500+rwhp then your better off going FI. If your ok with 420rwhp or so the do tsp heads and a 228 cam.
Plus your going to need a stall.

I have those heads and a 231/237 .618/.608 lift cam on a 112 with 1 3/4 headers ls6 intake under drive pulley larger injectors and made 435 rwhp, going to need a lot more for that 500 hp mark if u are really set on 500 hp look at pat G's 500 hp thread.

It can happen with a 200 shot.

You also need to double your budget to cover the necessary upgrades to the driveline.

Youll never have enough power...theres always a faster car and even with 420 traction is an issue with tires at normal driving temps, so your sacrificing drivability for peak hp you cant put down on the street anyway.

Well I guess a more realistic goal would be to touch mid, low 11 sec in the 1/4. Iv been told that the difference money wise from 450 HP and 500 on a ls1 is pretty steep... If yall had 4k and wanted to build a 425-450 hp 01 fbody what mods would you invest heavily in or use? I would also be doing all the work myself..

In that hp range and sticky tires your 10 bolt won't last long, so factor in a used aftermarket rear at $1500-2000. I'd put in a big cam, 3600-4200 stall and the rear. If thats not enough put 100 shot on it, that'll get you high 10s probably!! Just my 2 cents!! Larry

Start by getting a good air intake system and good headers like kooks and american racing headers, 1/34 or 1 7/8 headers, maybe a cat back system or true dual with a x pipe, i just bought a moser 9" with the wavetrac diff plus chromoly driveshaft and that cost around $3600, get some AI heads or heads from TEA, like the 243's heads should be about $1300, around $400 for cam, think about how much that stock transmisson can handle, my od went bad in mine at 60K miles and i was only putting down 327rwhp w/ bolt ons, get a transmission cooler, heat= death to a 4l60, so i think i have around $1700 or so in upgrades in my trans. ***** expensive, need to make sure your drivetrain can handle all the power you are putting out with heads/cam. And i would reccomend getting a stall converter larger than a 3K, go for 3400 or 3600 wich would be around $800.

consider the TSP prc 225 cast heads with a custom cam from TSP,to make 450rwhp..whats your budget ?you will need a fast 92mm intake and TB .get a after market stall converter ,3600+rpms.
