Ah crap. When I installed the Mantons and checked preload, I was at .057" of preload. Total travel is .058" so I cannot run 7.572" long pushrods.

So, I double checked the GM gasket I used. It was .043" thickness. So, it was close to the Cometic I was using. But I didn't fully torque down the head when I measured length. I'm guessing I introduced some preload there because uncompressed, the gasket is like .058" in thickness. The other could have been error on reading the Comp Pushrod Checker. I said it was 15 turns, but it was more like 14.75, which changes the preload about .012". Not an exact science at all, unfortunately.

So, I'm re-ordering 7.550" length pushrods from Manton. I double checked this and got 275 degrees on my torque wrench to 22ft-lbs... so that equals .035" of preload.

I guess the lesson here is to assemble the heads as you plan to run it and measure. Any changes can alter your measurements. And .010" here and .005" there add up when you're using a short travel lifter with no room for error.

Can't they shorten them since they aren't 1 piece PR's?

Maybe the labor is more than new ones but its worth a shot

I'll see what they say. Probably less than buying a new set.

Yeah. I went to torque down the first rocker from "0" lash and had the lifter on the base circle... and it went a full turn and a little past. I was like NOOOO!!!

So I made really sure the length is right now. And having it bolted all down certainly helps.

No, it takes like 4 days to even get it from Manton. That's Thanksgiving. If I send mine back and they modify, I imagine I'm looking at first week of December before I can even drop them in.

So probably that week I'll get it back in the car.

Yep. It does suck. And I'm not dropping the engine in and then crawling up on the fender to try and reach the back cylinders. That's why I took it out. So I could do that without pain. lol

Pushrods came in late on Monday and I mocked them up Tuesday. I was getting .035" to .044" preload still, even though I ordered .015" shorter. So, I chalk it up to my measuring equipment being crap. But, I did try to mate up any variance in the pushrods with any outliers on the valves. Overall, I'm in the .035"-.040" range across the board. A little more than Tony Mamo specs for these lifters, but this is a cold reading. Hot, the preload will actually decrease, so I'll be fine.

Here are some pics of the rockers installed. I put some blue loctite on the bolts and torqued to 22ft-lbs, making sure the nose of the rocker was centered over the valve. I put Joe Gibbs assembly lube on both ends of the pushrods and on the tips of the rockers to protect everything on first startup.

I did the blue to seal the threads... I just worry I waited too long messing with stuff and it dried before I torqued... lol

Yeah the blue is very liquid like, the red will dry hard in an hour or so

But still is best to let cure fully for 24 hrs
