Question What springs to replace worn out patriots with? Cam specs inside.

What are good options for replacement springs and retainers given the following original specs of my cam? I would like to stay under $300 if possible.

Cam recommendation: (2000 F-body with stock 346 LS1 engine, stock 853 heads, .054” gasket, LS6 intake, 78mm TB, M6, 3.42 gear, 6600 rpm shift points, 6800 redline)
227/235 .614”/.621” 113LSA +2 advance (with 1.7 ratio rockers)
Comp LSL/LSL lobes 54-000-11 cam core
13017R/13019R HR113LSA +2 advance (111 installed intake centerline)

Cam Valve Events 0.006 0.050 0.200
Intake Duration - ID 277 227 151 13017R LSL lobe .614"
Exhaust Duration - ED 285 235 158 13019R LSL lobe .621"
Lobe Center Angle - LSA 113 113 113
Intake Centerline - ICL 111 111 111

The original recommendation for springs when this cam was spec'd out was Patriot Extreme Dual Springs with Ti retainers. The previous owner put in the cam and patriot dual valve springs. My calculations have pointed to there being roughly 25k miles on the springs. I feel like that's a bit long in the tooth for those springs.

I like Lunati Gold dual springs, they're good for .660" lift. If you want something really heavy duty, check out PAC 1521 dual springs.

Brian Tooley platinum springs are the best on the market IMO, and very cheap. He sells tons of them to replace these **** poor patriots

Thanks for the kind words! I have two springs that will drop in and work with the old Patriot components, the Extreme and the Platinum. Go to my site and check under "valve springs" prices shown are shipped since I ship everything in the US for free!

Another vote for the Tooley springs, he will be getting my business when the patriots need replacing. I like that you can keep the titanium retainers and just swap the springs.

How do you figure that the Patriot Springs are "**** Poor" The gold's and the extreme's are extremely good springs. They have great harmonics. They are extremely high quality springs. Plus coming with the super 7 retainers and locks are a huge advantage over setups with standard LS locks

Brian can explain that better than I can, as he explained it to me one time as well.

Another vote for the platinum set.

I would have to respectfully disagree with the super 7 locks being a huge advantage. They add 3.5 grams of weight to the overall retainer/lock combination, and they add almost .150" to the overall height of the retainer, which also adds weight.

The stock locks are designed to promote valve rotation, which sounds bad, but is needed to help the valve tips live when the stock rocker scrubs across them.

Tell me about your springs, looking @ the specs the only differnce I see between Extreme and the Platinum is $20

As for Patriots i have a 5000mi set that checks ok closed and 40lbs light
open. Thought I was going to reuse thm in a couple of weeks for a cam swap.

They're very similar, however the Platinum springs undergo different processes that enable them to hold their pressure better than the Extreme springs.

Do you have the Patriot Gold or the Xtreme springs? What's the open pressure?

Patriot Golds
Closed pressure 140@1.74
Open Pressure 335@1.14
open is within .050 of bind

How many more miles can be expected with the platinums?
Im all about the most reliability I can get.
Putting in a Tick Torque Max stage2 LSA110+3 (milder: 226/234 | .59x"/.60x" | LSA110+3)

SKU:SP001 is the correct # for the Patriot replacement?

I would expect about 30K miles, maybe upwards of 50K. They have a lot more pressure than the old Gold springs. The Gold springs are marginal with a .600" lift cam, at least they were in the spintron testing I was involved in. Shimming them would probably help them a lot.

Yes, SP001 is the correct part #, SP003 will also work.

Well I think I'm sold on the BTR .660" spring kit with tool steel retainers.

If the only thing I'm changing up is the sprink kit, can I run the same the push rods or should I look into replacing those as well? I don't know anything about them besides their length, according to the previous owner.

Quote:Shimming them would probably help them a lot.

Those pressures are with .060 shims @ .050 of coil bind so there is nothing
left to shim. At 1.74 they should be @ 375lbs new. 5000mi with a cam w\.531 lift
I would expect them to be at a better pressure than that.

I've known Brian for several years, and not one time has he sold me a part that has not been top notch. I used one of his 4.6L 2V spring kits in a engine I put together, and again they were made with quality in mind. If you have a valvetrain question to 10 people, you will get 10 answers. What sets him apart is his answers are based off spintron, dyno, and race data. Not opinion. Bottom line, he knows his stuff!

Is there anything I need to order with the spring kit for a "flawless" installation? Does it come with everything needed like shims and the sort? I've never swapped springs before and want to make sure I have all my eggs in one basket.

Super, thanks for the business!

And thanks for the kind words guys! No one is perfect, and no product is infallible. All we can do is try to offer the best products we can find at reasonable prices and back that up with good customer service before and after the sell.
