Default What size piston rings do i need?

I am rebuilding my motor and am looking up orices and parts. I am getting the block honed. Do i need different size rings or stock rings? Also what are the stock ring size? And what do i need to do to break them in.

Thanks

The machine shop will tell you what size pistons and rings you'll need. If you need bigger rings, then you'll also need bigger pistons.

I would be honing it myself, in which case i wouldnt need new pistons or rings correct? Because i am not boring it over?

Correct the machine shop should take care of you, especially if they are assembling your motor.

If their honing your stock 3.898 bore for instance to 3.905 then you would need a 3.901 sized piston for it to have a .004 piston to wall clearance for a NA motor...

So it all comes to how much they are taking out of your cylinders. Call them and ask 21 questions lol

Honing is like a mini bore job, you have to check piston to wall gap. Decide what piston you want, find out the clearance the piston needs (2618 typical forged piston) likes .004 for NA motor, .005-.006 for FI

Are you using stock pistons? You can't hone out your block too much or else you need bigger pistons

I am planning on using stock pistons. My dad is saying we are just going to hone it ourselves. Which is just pretty much cleaning it up and not really boring over any. Or am i thinking anout this wrong? lol. We keep arguing because he always works with big blocks and punches them .030 over and gets new pistons. He sasy we shouldnt need to go to a machine shop to just hone the block.

I see, you are doing a redneck/ghetto hone. I don't recommend it, but if you insist, do a light hone and get new standard rings. They may or may not seal. I'm assuming Dad is used to working on old school iron blocks?

I get it, he's old school and is use to not checking all the clearances..

If your using stock pistons then I would do little to no honing. As little as possible

Yah hes used to the iron blocks haha. So if the block looks fine, i dont even need to hone it? Is it recommended to hone it though?

He says he just wanted to ball hone it and be done.

How do the walls look? If your not expecting great results and this is just a daily driver then you can do a quick ball hone but not much and get new rings...

I guess it comes down to your budget, just a heads up for next time you build your engine.

goodluck

Cylinders sometimes wear sort of egg shaped. A do-it-yourself hone is not always going to fix it. Really, a reputable machine shop should at least check it to see what you're up against. If this is for an old beater or farm truck, hone away. But, if this is for a performance engine, I'd highly recommend spending the extra coin and doing it right. You want those rings to seat and make a good seal.

Yah that's what I figured. If they do that what are the chances of me needing new pistons? Is it only if the walls are really bad that I would need new ones?
