Default Pistons have valve marks. good for H/C build?

would a ls1 short block with valve marks be ok for a heads/cam build? will the marks effect the performance at higher rpm?

Could you elaborate on "marks". Are they intentional valve reliefs, broken springs or an over sized cam?

A pic would be awesome.

I am guessing you are referring to marks made by mechanical overrev/and or dropped valve etc..You are probably ok, had a few after missing a 3-4 shift, went into 2nd! Bent PRs and broke a rocker, pulled the heads to check the valves and quite a few of the pistons had little divots...ran fine after I got it all put back together.

yes i had a miss shift at 100mph, i quickly hit the clutch and put the car into 4th but once i got off the highway car was miss firing. i ended up bending valves which made marks on the pistons.

i want to do 400-450hp heads/cam setup using this block and want to make sure i wont have any issues reaching that horsepower with this shortblock the way it is

Should be fine as long as the "eyelashes" aren't deep. There's a decent amount of piston there - about .220" depth, so a small little nick isn't going to weaken it for NA. Now, if you want to spray the **** out of it, you might have some problems if it's cracked.

Just flycut the pistons over the dents. Win/win.

It's really a tough call. It depends on how bad they are (have pics?) and how lucky you are. Hyper pistons are strong but brittle. They don't take too well to impact/detonation.

My stock bottom end had those little indentions after a miss shift. A friend of mines dad drove it and went from 3rd to 2nd going for 4th (car had a torquer 2 then). The first time I had the heads off (had someone do it before) I thought they had been flycut but I talked to the guy that pulled them before and he said they were there then. That was 10k miles ago and alot of 6k+ launches at the track and shes still going strong (knock on wood). Unless they look like they were done with a hammer and chisel I wouldn't worry to much.

Aluminum pistons are soft. If they are touched by a little valve float or over rev they should still be OK. Now if u notice chipped pistons or a crack. Well it'll be a good reason to go with forged internals
