Really nice job on the port work BTW.....RonSS as well...from someone who's

Anyone know what the min guide length should be? I have read somewhere that 2 inches on a 11/32 valve. I have also seen guys grind almost the entire valve guide out. Any experimentation with this, 7mm valves, or using bigger valve combos like a 2.02/1.57, or 2.00/1.60? Only ask because sometimes the low lift can benefit, like a vortec head, the port stalls around .550 but the avg can go up.

The shorter the guide the more valve deflection hence less life expectancy.
I just did some 7mm Manley valve stuff and the bronze guides that they sell
were right around 2.25" in length.

I would say the porting is the cheap and easy part the seat and guide work is the expensive part.. There is no point in improving flow if the valve can't seat properly you force the cylinder with air and the blow it past the seats cause the valve guides wear faster. It's like adding more ring gap for less frictional loss but you lose power blowing it
Past the rings

Yes, this area is beautiful. This weekend is SCCA Nat'l runoffs. It's a wide range from Pinewood Derby to full blown Indy cars.

Yeah I have a set dos is in las vegas now already on the car.. lol ..Doggyb22 heads are probably the best to date 222 cc int 86 exhaust .. I was able to improve the mid range numbers while still making 7 more cfm at .600 which was 210 cfm on 83 cc's the factory bowl works nicer then a hogged out round bowl.. I think its safe to say the shape of the factory port is not too bad and less is more ..

Picked up by the recycle truck this morning.......
Kidding.

So here is the final exh port. I raised the exit 1/8", blended back to the guide.

Since these won't see a flow bench, who knows if it helps.

Now ready for the valve job

Heads are with the machinist for the VJ. He had a couple of suggestions, like rougher intake port finish, but otherwise liked my work. He will do a 4 angle with the Serdi

Ron do you have a photo with the gasket over you exhaust port ? it almost looks like you port matched the upper half of the port ?

First I bolted the exh manifold on and scribed it's port shape on the head. A bit tricky, takes a hook shaped scribe.
Then laid the gasket on the head, manifold port is much larger than the gasket, so I scribed the gasket shape on the head. I enlarged only the top of the port to about .050" short of the gasket scribe line.
I know rat motors like the exh port raised at the roof exit. Does it apply here? Not sure!

My guy is going to do a radius type cut on the exh seat.

BTW....manifold because these are going on my 5.3 turbo engine.
I think you should try this on a junk head and see how good, or bad it flows!
