200,000 stock shortblock ls1 questions...
I just recently bought a 99' SS from my dad that has over 200,000mi on it. He has taken great care of it and it seems to run very strong. I was wondering if it would be wise to do H/C/I and bolt-ons on it. If I do a compression check on it and it seems good it should be fine, right? about how much power would it make with say...ls6 H/C/I and some decent LTs, exhaust, lid and tune?

go ahead and do a compression test and do a leak down test and see how that goes. it may turn out fine, but you still may have a lot of bearing wear, which swapping high performance parts in for the stock stuff will probably be a roll of the dice. if you do the cam swap take a look at the cam bearing and see how they look.

A small cam and a set of decent 243's or equivalent should be fine.
For starters, I would do a compression test and send an oil sample off to Blackstone. These two alone will paint a decent picture as to the soundness of your engine.
If everything checks out, go for it.
Making a blanket statement that it would be a gamble or whatever solely on the mileage is nonsense. I've seen 40k engines look like they had 400k on them and high mileage engines look like they are brand new. It's all about how it's taken care of.

Yea if he ran good synthetic oil and took care of it you should be fine, but the compression test will def tell the tale...fwiw I'm running a 200k+ engine and the bearings looked good and still has great oil pressure...at least you know the previous owner and can get idea of the shape...but for as cheap as these engines are I wouldn't be afraid to h/c/I it and if for some reason the engine ***** the bed you can get a used shortblock 5.3 for next to nothing or for like 800-1000 get another ls1...these motors aren't a problem with high miles as long as they were treated right...good luck man

compression test, dyno it, and take it to the track and compare with other similarly modded cars.
I wouldn't be afraid of the miles, I've got 206k on my bolt on stall geared car, best oil pressure I've seen in a LS car and sounds the healthiest. everyone looks at the car and guesses it has under 50k miles on it, its all how its been treated.
fwiw, my car made 300rwhp bone stock with 140k on it, and 330rwhp with full bolt ons, stall, heavy wheels, 190k, and 100* Texas heat.
I had a beat to hell ls1 before this with 114k on it, I was scared to death it would let go on me. this one? not even close lol. its all about how it was taken care of
