99 T/A A4 ls1 looking for big DD cam
Getting ready to order power parts for the T/A. 99 LS1 A4. At the moment i have almost knocked out my suspension and frame bracing. Looking for a cam to mate with ls6 intake, LT headers with full exhaust. A4 has been rebuilt and shift kit. Looking to get a cam that will get me 400+ rwhp. The car is a daily BUT my route to work is maybe 5 miles on highway. I mainly run highway very rarely city. Trying to figure out what cam and stall to run. I was looking at the Hawks sinister cam or ms3 if i can make them dailys but if i can get the 228r or V.2 110lsa at over 400 id be happy. I want a rough idle. What do you guys think for cam and stall?

Two things to consider here...dynos can vary, so you may end up dissappointed. Secondly, a rought idle can be enhanced big time by your choice in exhaust. Just food for thought

Ya a few cam only 228r ls1s have gotten 400 plus but it doesn't mean a thing. I wouldn't want to dd anything much bigger.

I love my 236/242 .617/.613 Thunder Racing RapTR and what used to be a 4l60e with a FTI 4000 stall and Strange S60 with 3.73's. Now I'm doing a 4l80e with everything similar with the motor and similar FTI converter. Only thing that was bad about it, which I notice less and less was the bucking at early lock up.
I hear good things about Comp's LSR cam grind as well. Good to look into.

I'd look to get something with around 4 degrees of overlap if you want to daily drive it and still make power and have it sound pretty healthy.
The old cam I had from EPS was a 230/234 114 and it had 4 degrees of overlap. So something in that neighborhood would work well.

I would have no issues daily driving mine either at 230/238 also from EPS. He also did a lot of 230/236 grinds that were popular around here until everyone started running mostly Tick cams (who also seems to be a very good vendor).
Something in that area would be as big as I would go for a daily. It will make a majority of the power of a much larger cam but still be easy to tune and drive well with a milder converter.
Pair it with a Yank SS3600 for a perfect street car compromise (1.67-1.74 60fts for me) or a Yank SS4000 for better track performance.

I Run a 228R with a 3600 stall and it drives smooth... nice choppy idle, good power, and can easily be driven as a DD. Not to mention the power band you get with the cam. I chose this cam simply because of streetability.

I very rarely drive city mostly highway. When looking for a cam i want something with highway power but city manners(if possible) I want a rougher lobe but not looking towards doing gears yet. I have a great tuner out here that can make a big cam streetable. What cam should i look into if im not wanting to do gears yet?

It will depend on the dyno and if the converter is locked or unlocked, but surely yes. All of our customers with this cam are making between 415rwhp-455rwhp/385-415rwtq cam only with 6 speeds. I would have to imagine you would hit close to those numbers with the converter locked.
More importantly than the dyno, it will perform well on the street and at the track. I can see this combination being a solid 11.2-11.4@116-118mph.
The 4400 stall will help it E.T. very well and run the streets like a boss.

Disappointed? Yeah people cry all the time when their car dynos low...but in the end of the day, the seat of the pants feeling/ET is the important piece.

I'd go 229/233 (LsL lobes) on 112/111 on LS6 intake and stock heads. Bigger will make less power under the curve and want to spin higher. Yank - PT4400 or similar regardless.

Another reason to love ls1tech, most other forums refer to "which cam" as some fictitious name, here it's laid down simple: duration/lift/LSA and often the lobe type.
