Default Opinions on Upcoming Build

Hi all,

I have a 35th anniv, here are a list of some of the engine mods I am looking at doing. Any opinion or if you have an numbers in comparison to these parts, please share!

Thanks,
Adam

4.10 gears, 233/239 cam with 112 lsa and .650 dual spring, ASP Crank Pulley, F.A.S.T. 36lb fuel injectors, TS long tubes 1 /78, and possible their true dual exhaust, (or a custom td, or a Y pipe?)

Tasteful list there.

Understand the rear is weak in itself, and the 4.10's will make it weaker. Add a Ratech master kit to that as well for the rebuild. I'd personally do 3.90's for the increased pinion size.

Everything else looks good. I liked Duals on my Camaro. Loved them. Really cleaned up the rear by no having tips.

I see you haven't addressed the clutch...? You'll need to. Trust me. Looks like a great candidate for a Monster Stage 2 and a Tick master.

I'd do the following:

http://vengeanceracing.net/index.php...-kit-plus.html

Vengeance has a great all in one kit right now. Tick has a very similar kit as well. One thing I like about a cam kit like this is it includes everything you really should do when you replace the cam.

Big items of course are:

Vengeance Racing Custom Camshaft of Your Choice
Vengeance Racing 5/16th Hardened Pushrods
BTR .660" Lift Dual Spring Kit (very nice)
C5R Timing Chain (great upgrade)
Melling Hi Volume Oil Pump (great upgrade)
Comp Cams Trunion Upgrade (worthwhile upgrade)

Do that, grab the TSP 1-7/8" Headers and True Duals and you'd have a nice combo.

And down the road, you can send your heads to TEA or Ai and have them port your stock heads for 995 and you could add another 40rwhp or so to your combo.

The standard GM clutch will not be strong enough? And 3.90 in comparison to 4.10, what kind of increased life expectancy on the rear end would I be looking at?

Wow, ported heads would increase the overall power by 40? That's really impressive. I keep hearing that there isn't really much to port though?

at 400+whp it does not matter what gear ratio...you are on severely borrow time with a 6spd and any sort of spirited driving. the stock 10 bolt is garbage. no lie.

Ported heads are a wonderful addition. My quote from TEA for Stage 1 CNC 241's on stock valves with new springs/retainers/locks all set to roll was just under 1100 shipped to my door. Common dyno results seem to indicate 40+rwhp is normal. Many H/C/I swaps get 430-470whp with proper attention to detail.

That's with LS1 heads. AI and TEA do great port work. If you go with LS6 heads, it's more like 55rwhp over where you are now. But you need the 243/799 core or need to buy the new 243s which are like $650-700 + port work. Changing out spring isn't too hard if you get the cam/spring first.

I would look at a Monster Stage 1 Clutch and depending upon the cam, you could keep your stock rearend ratio. Moving to a 4.10 would significantly weaken an already horrible rearend.

Okay. So now, I should consider keeping the stock rear end, instead of upgrading to a 3.90 or 4.10?

Admittedly at this point, I cannot afford to port the heads. My budget is stuck at right about $3k.

Then I would do the cam kit I linked above, or the one on Tick's site with the same components + Comp Trunion upgrade, the Monster Stage 2 clutch kit, and Texas Speed LT headers and True Duals. That would be right around $3k. Actually, if you break it down:

$1270 Vengeance Cam Kit (VRX4 is what I'd do) -or-
$1070 Tick Cam Kit Link here with the SNS TorqueMax 2 plus the Comp Trunion Kit herefor $135

Texas-Speed 1-7/8" LTs and TDs are $612 + $460

Monster Stage 2 Clutch kit is $1025 from Tick with Tick Adjustable Master, new GM slave, and everything to install. Link here

That puts you pretty much right at your budget... And it'd be good to go when you upgrade the heads down the road. Just grab some BTR SLR Lifters for 199 and new head gaskets and you'll be good 420-440rwhp. Add a FAST 92 to that and you'll be over 450rwhp. And you can do that in stages.

One other option is the TSP PRC Stage 1 LS6 heads. They are 1199 with stock springs. Just swap over the BTR Springs from the Cam kit to those when you swap your heads and you'll pick up a solid 40-45rwhp with those. You wouldn't have any downtime with that option vs sending in your stock heads.

So, you feel that those components will get me better numbers than the parts I've listed above?

You don't need fuel injectors with a cam. You will once you upgrade the heads. Stock injectors will be good to ~420rwhp. I'd go ahead and get the clutch now as that will be a good investment and will probably need to be replaced with the power you'll be making with the cam. Get the Tick setup with the adjustable master. It'll be easier to drive the car faster.

As for the cam, I don't like that profile. It's a 233/239 112+0. Not enough power under the curve for a 6-speed. I like the 227/234 111+2 of the Tick cam I mentioned or the 228/230 112+4 of the Vengeance. The Tick cam has more stable lobes from Comp (LSL/LXL) and is a good cam for making power and torque. It will also work with the 3.42s nicely.

Ditch the 4.10s. The 10-bolt will just grenade. That'll cause you more problems to your bank account.

And your parts list doesn't include the other items you need to consider like timing chain, trunion upgrade, and oil pump. You have to take the front cover off and remove the oil pump and timing chain anyway. Go ahead and replace them with better components. Cheap insurance. Same for the trunions. You don't want to spill needle bearings in your engine due to the more aggressive cam. Again, cheap insurance.

Also, ditch the ASP pulley. It's straight garbage. Get the Powerbond from SDPC for $219 with belts. It's good for the money. I recommend ATI, but if it's a street car, the Powerbond isn't terrible for the price.

Okay, this is all fantastic information, but as far as writing it all down, there isn't much of a list of this build you're recommending. Hit me with a list please. Thanks.

-Tick Cam kit with TorqueMax 2 and the Ported Oil Pump, C5R Chain, and gaskets as options (link provided above)
-Comp Trunion Upgrade (link provided above)
-Monster Stage 2 Kit from Tick with Tick Master Cylinder and GM Slave (link provided above)
-SDPC Powerbond Balancer kit with belts and reusable bolt here
-Texas Speed LTs and TDs

You've got to click the links I've provided in the above posts to see what I'm talking about.

But here is the list:

Tick TorqueMax 2 Cam 227/234 111
Tick 7.425" Pushrods
BTR .660" Dual Valve Springs
Tick Ported Oil Pump
C5R Timing Chain
GM Gaskets
Monster Stage 2 Clutch
Tick Adj Master Cylinder
Tick Speed Bleeder
GM Slave
GM Pilot/Throwout Bearing
Powerbond 25% UD Pulley
Gates Belts
SDPC Reusable Balancer Bolt
TSP 1-7/8" LT Headers
TSP True Duals

Next stage, I would do TSP Stage 1 LS6 Heads for 1199, BTR SLR Lifters for 199, GM Head Gaskets for $50 or so, FIC resized injectors for 299, and a FAST 92/92 combo for $1150.

All told, you'd be in the 440-450rwhp range.

CaGMaro,

To get the most out of your F-Body for your $3,000 budget, I would recommend looking into our Vengeance Racing Camshaft Kit Plus ($1,269) , and the American Racing 1 7/8" Longtube Headers ($1,320 + y-pipe of your choice).

If you are running the OEM clutch, we do offer a great upgrade from Mantic Clutch for single or twin disc setups starting at $755

Feel free to give us a call if you would like to discuss what camshaft would be best for your application. We look forward to working with you!
