ported 243 heads, best one for poor people
I'm slowly picking away at an Lq4 build and up until about 15 minutes ago was sold on ported Ls3's. It seems the more research I do I find out that the 243's perform better. Initially I was going to buy the GM ported Ls3's, PAC spring and yada yada yada and have something good. On my old SBC I bought AFR 195's, installed my old roller rockers and off I went so that's what i'm looking to do. Open the box, install roller rockers (have no idea which direction to go on those either) and be done. Currently the motor is at the machine shop, going to be a stock bore lq4, callies compstar rods and diamond pistons. Next step for me is deciding a cam but before I call tick I want to know exactly which head I'm going to run.
Thank you
Thank you

Just throw the 243 heads on and go unless you can afford the 8-900 Cnc porting from tea or AI which is the cheapest way to go if you get a cheap pair of cores, if no cores buy some Texas speeds ready to roll..also ditch the idea of using roller rockers, Ls engine is not the same as a sbc, the roller are more of a problem and offer no real gain other than adding weight to your valve train so you can rev lower and slower

Looking to put this car as close to the tens as possible. I'll spend whatever I have to for decent heads, but I have to draw the limit somewhere. I buy parts slowly when I work ot. Having no roller rockers would be fantastic, saves some coin.

I would not do roller rockers. Not with stock heads and stock guides. The stock rocker is great and lightweight. Just get the trunion upgrade. This isn't the same as SBC. RR on LS1 are far from an upgrade.
If you have access to 241s (and they can be had much cheaper) you can get those ported as well or the 5.3L heads and both would make a good upgrade adding ~40rwhp over stock LS1 heads. Ported LS6 would be good for closer to 55rwhp over stock LS1 heads, but cost more to get into. TEA or AI would be my choice. Similar price from both of them on ported LS1 or LS6 heads. ~$1k + springs.

I have 317 heads right now, motor is an 03 Lq4 that I bought for $100 complete with a spun cam bearing. It's going to be carbed in a full weight 68 Camaro RS/SS. I have the stock rockers off the 317's. Basically I just want something that will work optimally with not many cubic inches, I hear the Ls3's work well with a stroked motor....mine isn't. I plan on saving the 317's on the shelf if I ever go turbo.

Since you own the 317s already, look into A.I.'s welded chamber 317 setup. They can get you awesome compression and PTV while using what you already have. Buddy just got a set done and they turned out fantastic.

I hear ya there. How much power would I be leaving on the table vs using the tea or tsp 243's? I really don't want another mid 12 slug of a motor. Do it once and do it right this time around.
